  • Description

Sita’s Sister, by Kavita Kane, delves into the life of Sita’s sister and the neglected wife of Lakshmana, and one of the little-known characters in the Ramayana. A gripping tale of fact and fiction, the author makes an earnest attempt to understand the protagonist well in this book.

    Summary of the Book

While Sita goes into exile with Rama and Lakshmana, her younger sisters stay back at the ill-fated palace of Ayodhya, and their hope and joy seem to have been wiped away. But there is one woman of immense mettle and conviction who stands apart among them - Urmila. Urmila, whose husband, Lakshmana, decides to accompany Rama and Sita to the forest rather than stay with his bride. She could have insisted on joining him just like Sita did with Rama. But she does not. This book tries to probe into her mind and find answers to questions like: why did she agree to stay back in the palace, waiting for her husband for fourteen achingly long years?

    Just wow!

This book is a symbol of Excellence. I am 15 years old and totally loved this book. It has a very good language and at the same time it is entertaining which creates a hunger in us to finish this unique book ignoring other activities. Even though most of us know the story of Ramayana, this book is really interesting. It revolves around the phase of vanavasa not in forest ,but in the palace where Urmila lives with extraordinary courage waiting her beloved one-Laxmana.Trust me ,go for it. I fin...

    The Unforgettable Journey

I have always been fascinated by mythological stories and so when I started on the book, it was with a certain amount of curiosity and eagerness to explore the unknown. As I read through the book, I realized that the story had grown on me in the sense that I started relating to the main character and it also struck me that there resides an “Urmi” in every one of us not to mention, a “Sita”, a “Mandavi” and a “Kirti” too. Each character as woven by the author is distinct and adds a flavor to...

    Thought-provoking.........

I had read Karna's Wife by the same author, so had high expectations from this book too. She did not disappoint. An excellent book.
This book is not about the well-known characters of Ramayana - Rama and Sita. But this is about Lakshmana and Urmila who are always in the background. They are the real, true heroes. They facilitate all the heroics performed by Rama and Sita. Ramayana would not have been possible without such characters.
This book has been written from the point of view of a fre...

    A must read!

Just finished reading the story of a princess with beautiful looks, a kind heart, a curious mind, a positive outlook, and a free soul. I finally a character that I connect with.
Urmila- the second born, the angry one, the expressive one, the strong one, the undiluted human being!
So much to learn from an unspoken character in Mythology - unfaltering faith, undying patience and the need to not be the center of attention

Book Review : ‘Sita's Sister' by Kavita Kane

‘Sita’s Sister’ is a rather thought provoking read. Even if we have read the earlier versions of the Ramayana, which basically put Urmila to sleep, one must read this particular piece. It would help truly understand how and what the women’s lives were like at the time of the Ramayana.

It starts off with a prologue, and the tiny Sita holding up Lord Shiv’s bow. Just with those words, Kane establishes the silent strength of the book. Moving on, let us go on to understand who the book is all ab...

Love with the charecter Mila...so real!

Beautiful book by Author Kane. I randomly picked the book out of curiousity towards this charecter of Ramayana. Needless to say, I was thrilled to read every bit of it.

A thought provoking piece made me in love with my Mila. There are certain instance i was so soaked in the story that put me in either tears or bliss. Mila was a very powerful soul, quick witted, lovable, trustworthy and someone who had courage to speak her heart and mind out. The lovelorn aspect was touching and painful. I al...
