(This novel has been long listed for Man Asian Literary Prize 2011 for Fiction)
A twenty-six-year-old Indian journalist decides to give up his job and travel to Guyana, a forgotten colonial society of raw, mesmerizing beauty. But he is not just seduced by the country: he is also captivated by the feisty yet fragile Jan, and together they embark on an adventure which will take them into a new country and change both their lives. In his dazzling and ambitious debut novel, Rahul Bhattacharya has captured the heady adventures of travel, the overheated restlessness of youth, and the paradoxes of searching for the meaning of life in the escape from home.

Its a pretty different sort of novel. This book is more sort of grand thali at an up-scale restaurant.
Travelling: takes you for a big ride in the Guyana.
Humanistic Interaction: in the course of travelling the protagonist meets a lot of folks, discuses about their life, idiosyncrasies, food, music ...
Love Story: the first interaction, the chase, love making and the twists.
Cricket: cricket greats from Caribbean.
The best of the author comes out in describing the good things about the normal, common, mundane actions of daily life.
An average novel. a Travalogue primerley, than a novel. But the depiction of Guyana and adjacent places done well. One could get the feeling of wild beauty of Guyana, its landscape and culture. Lack of something that take people attach to the story visible. Bhatachary is basically a cricket writer/journalist..afterall he managed to take readers with him all through the Novel. The book is jst above average..
We chose the book fr our Book club...and read Rahul Battacharya in Nov..and has read House fr Mr Biswas in Oct...Naipauls 1st book was way ahead of Rahuls ...we read along with Rahuls journey...but personally i feel he has a long way to go..to become readable readable
A novel that feels like liquid gold. It captures life. Read it patiently and with an open mind. It is full of surprising observatoins and wisdom. Many lines are like epigrams. Also many jokes! It won the Royal Society of Lit Ondaatje Prize and Hindu Prize. Indians will understand their history.
