About the Author
Mysore Narasimhachar Srinivas was an eminent Indian Sociologist. Born in 1916, he is noted for his extensive work in exploring the Indian caste system, Sanskritization, Westernization and their causes and effects through the times. His work was primarily centered around South Indian society. A noted scholar of his times, Prof. Srinivas graduated from the University of Bombay, earning himself a doctorate in sociology. He then finished his Masters from the University of Oxford. Apart from authoring several books such as Marriage and Family in Mysore, Caste in Modern India and other essays, and The Dominant Caste and Other Essays, Prof. Srinivas also taught in various institutes like the University of Delhi, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, and the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore. He is also the recipient of many awards and accolades such as the Padma Bhushan and many honors from the University of Bombay, the Royal Anthropological Institute, and the Government of France. He passed away in 1999.
