This four-volume series of socio-economic profile of rural Indian is based on the village study reports of IAS trainees. Volume one on south India, Published in 2002, contains papers of the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka , Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The present volume (vol. II) on north- east India covers the states of Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Nagaland. The other two volumes of this series are also in the pipeline. They cover North- Central and Western India (Punjab, Haryana, Himchal Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra) and Eastern India(Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh).
