Sony VAIO SVE14A16FN Laptop (3rd Gen Ci7/ 4GB/ 750GB/ Win7 HP/ 1GB Graph)

I was looking for a laptop with some great specs, my main requirements were a good resolution (at least 1440 x 900), a quad core processor and 16GB memory support. The main use of the laptop was going to be some programming and browsing.

Screen and webcam:
Screen is average, its glossy but with a good resolution, gives you a lot of space to fit your content. Webcam quality is questionable.

Keyboard & Touchpad:
Keyboard is chiclet style, just like we find in Apple Macbooks, tactical feedback is OK not as good as Thinkpads I have been using, key spacing is adequate. Keyboard is backlit and turns on automatically whenever there is less light, a good feature to have. Mousepad is combined, again like Macbooks. I didn't find mouse pad experience good, it has multi-gesture support but sometimes it behaves really stupid may be due to bad drivers. Due to a combined/single interface left and right click areas are not well defined.

Performance and Gaming:
Its good but not great, some of the benchmarks I ran:
Geekbench 32-bit Score: 8900 (good!)
wPrime 32M: 11.03 secs (great!)
PCMark 07: 2900 (Average, affected by 4GB RAM and some crappy software came installed with laptop).
3DMark 11: 1080 (Poor due to a poor 1GB Radeon graphics card)

It can run 1080p movies without any problem and the sound quality of the speakers is good enough, Dolby gives you a good experience for music.

Ports:
There are 2 USB 3.0 ports and that is great for future USB 3.0 devices. It has one HDMI and one VGA port, I have yet to see if it can support 2 additional monitors.

The bundled laser Bluetooth mouse has a good quality but the keyboard skin is of no use.

In the last I would like to talk about the ergonomics and form factor of the laptop. Ergonomics is just great, no extra buttons on the keyboard, laptops back and front has no ports which is good for using it anywhere even on the bed. Weight is slightly more than 2 kg but its thinner than most of the laptops I have seen (I am not talking about Ultrabooks).

Overall this laptop is a good buy if you are looking for performance and not for gaming.

CONS:

1.This laptops make is of plastic with metalic gloss its not acualy alumunium body as of mac.

2.There is no separation between Rt ans Lft mouse keys which makes is cross key most of the time.

3.It has an AMD7670/Intel 8000 HD graphics which requires designated selection of program to switch graphics(but would have got a slow performance to high performance switch).

4.The part aaround the screen is made of soft plastic gets scratched even if use a little rough cloth to clean it.

5.Switch to Wifi is not present, can only be enabled through Operating system.

PROS:

1.Sleek Design.

2.Metalic look(only as look not as touch).

3.3hrs+ battery on heighest brightness and 4.5hrs+ on 20% brightness.

4.Upgradable upto 16GB of RAM(Initialy only one 4GB RAM is supplied 2nd slot is empty for upgradation).

5.I got a free bluetooth mouse and a keyboardcover same color as of the laptop(but the keyboard-cover usualy covers all the illuminated light of the keyboard,its may only be used to protect from dust,night use of cover is impossibl).

This is a very good laptop,the screen is amazing(1600x900),it's got a great keyboard(good spacing and nice tactile feel) with wonderful backlight,the sound is not too loud but the audio clarity is very good thanks to the xLoud and ClearPhase technology,it's not too heavy...very much portable at 14'inches.This is not a gaming laptop but it does come with a 1GB graphics card.This is worth its price for a very good performance laptop.+It also comes with a nice wireless mouse and keyboard sleeve(which is ok...)
