Book Summary of Speech And Language Processing

This book offers a unified vision of speech and language processing, presenting state-of-the-art algorithms and techniques for both speech and text-based processing of natural language. This comprehensive work covers both statistical and symbolic approaches to language processing; it shows how they can be applied to important tasks such as speech recognition, spelling and grammar correction, information extraction, search engines, machine translation, and the creation of spoken-language dialog agents.

Salient Features
  • Each chapter is built around one or more worked examples demonstrating the main idea of the chapter.
  • Integration of speech and text processing—Merges speech processing and natural language processing fields.
  • Covers all of the new statistical approaches, while still completely covering the earlier more structured and rule-based methods.

This Indian edition does not match the hardbound international edition

I think Pearson never released the new 2008 2nd edition of the book in paperback Low Price Edition for India. Specifically, I wanted a chapter called Computational Lexical Semantics which is the 20th one in the recent edition.

Other than that Flipkart delivery was awesome as usual. Got the book the very next day. The book in itself is worth every penny (especially for a LPE), heard a lot about it and lives up to the expectations.

Substantial changes between First and Second edition

This book the slightly older first edition. The second edition has substantial changes including new content and reorganization of chapters. If you are buying this book for a course whose syllabus is based on the second edition, be aware that you will find it frustrating to refer to this book. In my case, I'm almost forced to buy the second edition to keep in sync with the course.

Satisfied with the Product

I've no idea what's there in the International Edition that the Indian Edition is missing, but I found everything I was looking for in the sections words, syntax, semantics and pragmatics.

Delivery wasn't just quick, it was flipkart quick. :-)
