  • Description

Edward Luce’s In Spite of the Gods is an analytical book that examines the current state of affairs in India on a global scale. It tries to explain how India manages to hang on to the old world while still embracing the new.

    Summary of the Book

India is being lauded for its rising economic power and its image as the world’s largest democracy. However, it is also being criticized for the large percentage of illiteracy and the rampant poverty and unemployment. Edward Luce travels across India’s numerous regions, cultures and religious circles to understand what is holding it back. He tries to find what manages to keep the fragile balance between tradition and progress intact. He relates how he met religious gurus, politicians and villagers to understand their points of view and the problems they face. Despite India’s vast population, it has failed in actualizing its labour force, and Edward Luce explains how the education system continues to hinder this progress. Readers will understand much about India’s place in recent events and the expectations it has garnered so far in an international setting.

Great Book for the Youth of India

I finished reading this book today and would like to thank Edward Luce, the author, for such a comprehensive review of social, economic and political journey of India as an independent nation. The book is full of interesting anecdotes, interviews with people from different backgrounds and short biographies of major Indian personalities, describing how unique and distinguished India's dramatic rise has been and how it is expected to continue at even greater pace. However, Mr Luce also highligh...

    Enthralling Read

Edward Luce's thoroughly researched book presents an insightful analysis of India from 1991-2005. Though there are also important incidents prior to 1991 that give the reader a perspective to understand the subsequent chapters. In very simple language, Luce has dissected Indian polity, economy, society and more importantly the ethos of the nation. Without being opinionated and biased, Luce has enthralled and informed simultaneously. This is a MUST read for every educated Indian who wants to ha...

One of the most dangerous books on India...

It is sad if an author does not understand India; it is worse if the author has a partial understanding.... but it is dangerous if an author thinks he understands India. And if the author has both a partial understanding combined with a liking - a genuine affection for the country - the book gets elevated to the category of highly dangerous.

The is worth a read no doubt; but it is chock full of cultural and political misrepresentations. For example, you have a reference to the "Erotic" acti...

    In Spite of The Gods

No doubt the author has done a very exhaustive study and interviewed a lot of people. His narrations on so many aspects about India are, obviously, his perceptions. One can not, rather should not decisively comment, about intentions of traditions, customs, people and societal behaviour. Education was not imparted in India to so called lower classes is much of a myth. Without education and particular skills so many marvels in architecture, irrigation, preservation of environment could not hav...

Unbiased views about Indian Economics and Political history

For killing time i picked up this book up from a hotel library. This was the first non-fiction book I ever read. It turned out to be so impressive that it got me into reading non-fiction. I got to know much about indian economy and a bit of politics as well. The narration was amazing. The facts were in plenty. This book was a page turner as well. Nice read. Hope to read more books my Ed Luce.

    Well balanced scholarly work

Edward Luce have done a thorough research work in presenting the positives and negatives of India. There are many elements that make us to feel proud, but needless to say that Luce also honestly presents few other undeniable facts and ongoing activities in chapters 3&4 which propmts our thinking. A must read for every young Indian. The book helps us to think balanced.
