Book Summary of SQL Wait Stats Joes 2 Pros: SQL Performance Tuning Techniques Using Wait Statistics, Types & Queues
You learn a lot when thrown into a crisis situation – everyone looks to you to quickly solve the problem. The system is down, the CEO is pleading to you for answers, and each minute further cuts into the company's bottom line. When you are in a hurry, you need new ideas right away. This book is your helpful tool. When used correctly, you can determine solutions relating to these relatively simple (yet lesser known) are as of SQL Server. Learn what causes SQL tasks to wait or sit in queues. And even if your system is not in trouble right now, you can use what you learn in this book to keep your system healthy and expand your knowledge of SQL Server internals by gaining an understanding of wait statistics.
This book could be called 101 Best Wait Stats Solutions, and the title would probably only be inaccurate because there are more than 101 solutions in this book. There are almost 500 different wait types in SQL Server 2008, and that number is only going to increase over the next versions, so learning how to deal with wait stats now is very important. I think the best part about this book is that the author uses real world examples from his own experience in dealing with SQL Server, and also encourages feedback from his readers about what to add and improve. It’s almost like taking a SQL Server wait stats course, but you just have to pay for the book. There are ten chapters in this book, and they are laid out from simple ideas (“Introduction to wait stats”) through more complex. This makes the book a good reference for beginners and professionals. I would highly recommend SQL Wait Stats!
In a recent customer performance trouble shooting exercise they were getting into some sort of slowness in their application. Running couple of queries found some interesting insights into Wait Stats which was nicely explained in a whole chapter for CXPACKET.
More than just a reference this is a practical book on some of the major WAIT STATS which even a novice DBA can also easily understand.
A must buy for any DBA monitoring critical production environments and for those who are into advanced performance tuning.
