Stay Hungry Stay Foolish (Paperback) Price: Rs.87

Stay Hungry Stay Foolish is an array of twenty-five biographies about IIM-Ahmedabad graduates who are now successful entrepreneurs. This book is motivating, to-the-point, and is an eye-opener for young Indians.

Summary Of The Book

Stay Hungry Stay Foolish is a collection of stories about twenty-five IIM-Ahmedabad graduates who decided to stay out of the corporate world, and instead chose the road less taken. These men and women became entrepreneurs, and climbed the ladder of success.

Stay Hungry Stay Foolish shows how all these individuals come from different backgrounds, work in different industries, and have different outlooks, but they all strongly believe in the power of their dreams. This book has been divided into three parts, namely The Believers, The Alternate Vision and The Opportunists. The first portion talks about the hardship faced by entrepreneurs like Sanjeev Bikhchandani, who started Naukri.com, and the founder of Educomp, Shantanu Prakash.

The Opportunists focuses on people who were not inclined towards ownership, but their inventiveness turned them into entrepreneurs. The story of how Ruby Ashraf made her hobby into a business is inspiring. The last section focuses on individuals who have taken the entrepreneurial path to do things that impact culture and society. Creator of consultancy firm Chlorophyll, Anand Halve’s story, is covered here. Some other IIM-A, alumni whose stories have been included in this book are R. Subramanian, the owner of the Subhiksha group, and Sunil Handa, the founder of the Ekalavya Educational Foundation.

The author hopes to familiarize readers with these successful entrepreneurs, so that Indians can look beyond corporate jobs and salaries. At the end of each biography is a section that advises young entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the author also explains terms like ADEPT, ORRU, and XBRL.

Stay Hungry Stay Foolish has been compiled after extensive research, and the author has used a very personal and conversational style of writing. This book is concise, inspiring, educative, and filled with practical wisdom. More than 350,000 copies of Stay Hungry Stay Foolish have been sold, thus creating a new book record in India. The book has been translated into eight languages.

Inspiring read but only in scope of IIM-A

Rashmi Banshal, with this book, made an effort to instigate the entrepreneurial drive that had been long concealed under the cobwebs of naive social influences in an individual.

Since one's childhood, the society, namely parents, relatives, teachers, friends etc;, influences on one's thought process thus forbidding him/her taking any risk but aim for a secure job to lead a hassle free life. Though this is the case in every corner of the world, India especially, few of them see the world out of the box and destines to make a change in their life.

This book is about 25 such people, graduated from IIM-A, who have been living according to their passion instead of following the mundane herd. Calling the book "Inspiring" is fair but the question is, are we really inspired and started immediately doing something according to our passions? The answer probably is "NO". Reading without implementing is futile and I wonder how many truly realize that.

I have given 4 stars instead of 5 because, the book is a real worth for people who are aspiring for/graduated from IIMs' but would not be much for the rest. The reason being that most of these 25 enterprenuers, in the book, say that they were courageous enough to take risks in their life because they had the brand "IIM" and if anything goes wrong, they can easily secure a lucrative job offer. This is not the case for the common folk who are financially feeble to think about such B-Schools. These minor cons apart, the book has very good insights.

Stay Hungry but don't be foolish

Going through the contents, you will notice many familiar companies with their not so famous chairpersons. It does not speak about their lives but only a bit about how they started their business, their struggle and their creative minds. And of course all these entrepreneurs are alumnus of IIM A.
The book is divided in 3 parts, The Believers; The Opportunists; The alternate vision. The believers consist of people who knew entrepreneurship was their path. The opportunists consist of people who had not planned to take this path but when opportunity was realized, they followed it. And those who are using entrepreneurship to create social impact are the Alternate vision.
So much for the content, lets move on.

2.Research
IIM A has a great in house Innovation and Entrepreneurship wing, which supports the few innovative souls who do not want to get degree from the world no.11 management institute just to be an iBanker in US,UK,Singapore and get a heavy salary. IIM A has a legacy of 50 years, so the author had a very large database of Alumnus and their success stories to comb; she did a good job here. But in this book she has only narrated the successful ventures of IIM A graduates. If only she would have included few failures and te=he reasons for that, it could have been the average entrepreneurship book. that half star i have given is for research.

3.Writing of the author;End result
The writing is poor. The author is very much successful in killing the outstanding stories of these companies. Author is not very much focused with the narration of the stories. If you already know about these companies, you will say "is that it? There has to be more in this story, something important is missing" That's right, she has given more importance to the part of the story which was not very important, leaving important stuff with only a paragraph or two. That's not good when you are writing kind of a guide book. I would say not all IIM A graduates can write a book, If you know what i mean!
I liked the way author divided book into three parts, The believers; The opportunists; The alternate vision. So another half star for this part.

If you are looking for an inspiration to start a venture with very less details then you should buy this book. Though I would not recommend to buy this book. It is not very helpful as the author boasts it to be.

4.Let's checkout the alternatives
Rework by Jason fried. If you are looking for an inspiration and a practical approach to start and run your venture, this is the book for you. It is much costlier than Stay Hungry Stay foolish, but it's worth the money and a great book.

Of course flipkart.com played its part well to deliver the books in time and at the least prices online. (I also bought Connect the Dots with this book, for which I have similar views.)

Boring

I bought this book before my MBA (in 2010); you see, I wanted to be inspired about doing business. Couldn't read more than 2 stories then. The writing style is poor, and the stories are monotonous. The stories selected are also quite dull -- just a bunch of IIM grads, either bragging about the rags to riches story or how they extended their family business.
Anyway, I just got back home after the MBA and found the book lying around. Tried reading it again, and this time it seemed downright PATHETIC. One or two stories are just ok, but generally very boring. Honestly you can read so much bet...

Anyway, I just got back home after the MBA and found the book lying around. Tried reading it again, and this time it seemed downright PATHETIC. One or two stories are just ok, but generally very boring. Honestly you can read so much better stuff on the internet, don't waste time here. I even handed it over to Dad (to get another opinion). He read it for few hours and found it uninteresting.
I won't even gift the book to anyone else, lest they waste their time on it. So it gets trashed.

Inspiring, Interesting, thought changing

Firstly I liked the format of the book. Its more like a collection of short stories, only that all stories are real! It therefore makes a light read, you can finish a chapter in those small commutes or breaks.
Each chapter is a narration of the journey of one IIMA grad. The difficulties they faced, their inspirations, the decisions they took and why and finally some suggestions. Reading through it, you get to reflect on various topics. The experience unwound and laid in front of you helps see the larger picture and you can use it to make your life better by understanding the little everyday...

A truly thought provoking read, where each chapter is a journey into unchartered territories and at the end of each you emerge feeling the same jubilations and melancholy as the interviewee.

About this book

Its really a good book but can't say the best of its parity. Its enjoyable that all the people of the book have done a great contribution to the society, hence they all came from a great educational background.
