Hema Pande was born in 1928 at Bharatpur, Rajasthan. She went to Japan initially to learn Japanese painting. She studied Japanese in Calcutta and found it extremely interesting, as she did Japanese children's literature, specially their traditional folk tales. Her interest eventually moved her to translate some of them into Bengali and English.
