Subarnalata (Bengali) 1stReprint Edition Price: Rs.158

Subarnalata, Bakul Katha, & Pratham Pratisruti is a trilogy written by Ashapurna Devi, which is a reflection of the struggles faced by middle class women, who want to acquire the same rights as men, but are still expected to fulfill prescribed roles and expectations set out by a patriarchal society.

Summary Of The Book

In the first part of the trilogy, Pratham Pratisruti, through the story’s protagonist, Satyavati, readers will encounter a woman who refuses to accept the traditional roles of a woman and wife that are handed down to her. Against insurmountable odds, she manages to open a school for girls, and hopes to impart some of her radical ideas to her daughter, Subarna. Nevertheless, despite all of Satyavati’s efforts, Subarna is tricked into marriage, by her father and his family. Her mother responds by leaving the village, on a bullock cart, without looking back.

This will lead readers into the second part of the trilogy, Subarnalata, which is centered around Subarna and her unhappy marital life. She is depicted by Debi, as a bullied and battered version of her mother, Satyavati, who accepts abuse without any resistance.

In the final part of the trilogy, Bakul Katha, Debi introduces readers to Bakul, who is an educated and economically self sufficient, feminist writer, who is influenced by Western ideals of feminism. Debi portrays her protagonist as a woman who has misplaced her ideals of feminism because she remains passive and uninvolved in women’s issues. When her friend Namita, comes to her for help, after being abandoned by her husband, Bakul abstains herself from helping her friend.

Ashapurna Debi’s trilogy, was her magnum opus, because it portrayed the progression of feminism, from colonial to postcolonial India.
Each part of Debi’s trilogy was published in 1964,1967 and 1974, respectively. She received several awards for her contributions to Indian literature including the Jnanpith Award and Padma Shri Award from the Government of India, in 1976.

a landmark in bengali literature

this is a story of a bengali woman of late 1800. a woman who was bound in her in law's house throughout her life. a woman who used to think much ahead of her time. this novel describes the troubles and the fight of a bengali houswife of that time.
a must read for all who can read bengali.

Worth Reading It

This is a great & classy novel in bengali literature. A must read book for all the book lovers. Even if you cant read bengali there is also english translation of this book.
This book date backs to 19th century when womens used to face a lot of trouble in her in laws house. But Subarnalata whose thinking were much ahead of the time tried to implement changes in her in laws house where the biggest hurdles were her mother in law Muktokeshi who was very stubborn & used to stick to her rituals & the second one was her younger brother in law Pebha whose thinking was almost 180 degree opposite of Subarnalata & often they had a clash.
Overall its a awesome book but do read the trilogy- Pratham Pratisruti (Story of subarnalata's mother Satyabati date back to 18th century), Subarnalata(her own life story date back to 19th century), Bakul Katha(story of Subarna's youngest daughter Bakul which date backs in 20th century) as you will come to know how the status of women changed drastically in 2 centuries....

Just collect the book and read it

I had a long desire to read this book, but somehow I missed. We are out of Bengal since many years. Finally we got the book through Flipkart (thank you flipkart) and read it. I wouldn't give any description or details about this book, I don't have that capacity, I would only say in the tune of Ushashi Banerjee, just get the book and read it. Once you'll finish the book, you'll realize that you've got something that was missing in your life.
