Highly recommended
Watched it years ago on Doordarshan and hunting for its dvd since i don't know when. Finally thanks to NFDC , it's available in restored digital version.
For me this film is neither parallel art house cinema that Benegal used to make nor just a pretentious cinema but one of the most beautifully accomplished film based on Dharamveer Bharati's novel by the same name. It brilliantly narrated film that let you towards vivacious shades of human characters, emotions and fine interpretations of it. The film has many of Benegal loyal actors including Amrish Puri (in a brilliant act, off course) and it's indeed joy watching Rajit Kapoor in his refreshing debut. This is a kind of film which you love to devour even if you watch it just for one time. If you love Indian cinema in it's true salt, this is must watch for you.

A classic from Shyam Benegal
Shyam Benegal is one of Hindi parallel cinema's most respected directors and this film is one of his best. A multi-layered story that examines the phenomenon of romantic love from several perspectives, the film tells a complex bittersweet story in a simple and beautiful way. People that appreciate offbeat sensible cinema should definitely see this amazing film.
NFDC's DVD, while not immaculate, is a HUGE step-up from the previous awful Ultra DVD, with a significantly cleaner, more stable and colorful image. This is the best available release of the film and a very worthy addition to your collection of sensible Indian films.

Benegal's best
I am surprised to find a 4 star rating by the other reviewer. Dharamvir Bharati's metafiction has so beautifully been converted into this gem by Shyam Benegal that it couldn't have been any better. It also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1993.
