Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.424

Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman: Adventures Of A Curious Character is a compilation of the conversations that author and Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist, Richard P. Feynman, had with his friend, Ralph Leighton.

Summary Of The Book

Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman: Adventures Of A Curious Character is an almost autobiographical take on the life of the eccentric author, Richard P. Feynman. The book itself is a simple transcription of the many conversations that the author had with Ralph Leighton. The fact that the text hasn’t been fully edited points to the honesty of the book and the bare, candid account of the various hilarious events that took place in the life of this Nobel Prize-winning physicist.

Many incidents in Richard P. Feynman’s life are light-hearted and talk about his fascination with cracking safes, learning new languages, incidents like the time he painted a naked toreador and even playing on the drums to accompany a ballet.

There are other, more serious anecdotes, however, that detail incidents such as the author’s work on The Manhattan Project, during which time his wife died of Tuberculosis. Another chapter details the time he presented the Wheeler-Feynman absorber theory to renowned physicists Albert Einstein and Wolfgang Pauli.

The title of the book is directly derived from a time the author visited Princeton University. A woman at the university asked the author whether he would like to have cream or lemon in his tea, to which he naively responded that he’d like both, earning the titular response from the woman.

Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman: Adventures Of A Curious Character delves deep into the personality of one of the world’s foremost scientist. In a few instances, Richard P. Feynman describes oddities such as his lucid dreams that had him speaking to his foreign colleagues and perfectly imitating their accents. This was something that the author was unable to do whilst he was awake. The book was first published in 1985 and sold 500,000 copies.

About Richard P. Feynman

Richard P. Feynman was a world renowned theoretical physicist and a Nobel Prize-winner who played a pivotal role in the foundations of quantum mechanics and nanotechnology.

His other books include The Feynman Lectures on Physics and What Do You Care What Other People Think?

Richard P. Feynman was best known for his work on the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the quantum electrodynamics theory and the parton model of particle physics, which he proposed. He died at the age of 69 in the February of 1988 of two rare forms of cancer and his last words were reportedly that he wouldn’t want to die twice as he found it boring.

To Mr. Abhi

Well Mr. Abhi, first of all you need to know that this book is not supposed be a popular science book. It is simply the stories of Feynman's life. And second of all, from your writing it is quite clear that you don't know or haven't read anything else about Feynman (if you have then its even worse). So keep those dumb opinions to yourself.

the Genius who was a Wizard

There are two types of genius. Ordinary geniuses do great things, but they leave you room to believe that you could do the same if only you worked hard enough. Then there are magicians, and you can have no idea how they do it. Feynman was a magician.

This book isn't just for those in the domain of physics....it can be read and enjoyed by everybody. A truly legendary "teacher of teachers", his convivial nature, his gift of exposition, his insatiable curiosity, his penchant for mischief, and last for not the least, his severe l...

This book isn't just for those in the domain of physics....it can be read and enjoyed by everybody. A truly legendary "teacher of teachers", his convivial nature, his gift of exposition, his insatiable curiosity, his penchant for mischief, and last for not the least, his severe loathing for rote-learning, Feynman's genius and scientific temper is truly inspirational. He never burdened himself with the responsibility to live upto someone's expectations; rather, he did what he liked doing, and did he succeed! If anyone expects that as a Nobel-prize winner in physics, Feynman lived an austere life, the reader is in for a surprise: the "Dignified Professor" learnt how to play the bongo and the "frigidiera", participated in the Brazilian samba, delved into Mayan history, progressed to a great extent in drawing, and conducted some truly wacky but smart experiments! All in all, the book is an excellent piece of non-fiction that inspires readers to live their lives and at the same time enjoy their priorities in life.

Candid account of an ever curious, gifted - yet humble mind

Surely you're joking is a snippet account of the life of Prof. Feynman. There is so much to learn from his simple experiences of childhood brimming with frivolous experiments to his great achievements sprinkled across the book casually. All delivered with great humility.
I found my connection in the fact that I too have been curious over science and physical phenomenon right through childhood, and it is SO IMPORTANT never to let that die. Over time, as Prof. Feynman grew up, he devised methods to protect this curiosity as he dealt with people who were resistant to change and questions seek...

I found my connection in the fact that I too have been curious over science and physical phenomenon right through childhood, and it is SO IMPORTANT never to let that die. Over time, as Prof. Feynman grew up, he devised methods to protect this curiosity as he dealt with people who were resistant to change and questions seeking pure understanding. That to me, was the biggest take away; as it is this unfortunate resistance that plaques a large section of our society.

A great, leisure science read with delightful insights into the great man's thought process!

Mr. Feynman was an allrounder

When I picked this book, I thought I would get a sneak-peek into the nerdy scientists lives. But I just realized that not all scientists are nerdy. Mr. Feynman was not only a great scientist. He was multi-faceted.

As you go through the chapters of the book , you realize how witty, humorous, sarcastic and funny he was. I believe he has tried almost everything in life. Music, Drummer, Breaking locks, teaching..Gosh!!This man was super awesome one can only wish to be. He even tricked Einstein's assistant.

best book I've read so far

I'd already read this book some 6 years back from library. i've a soft copy too (that also i've read several times). Was waiting for its price to go down and bought this book to put in my collection. i'm an avid reader but writing review for the first time because cudn't resist. generally i prefer people making their own opinion about a book but this book is something, I bet, nobody can find lesser than BEST. most importantly its not genre specific. it cant be categorized, its at the interface of fiction, non-fiction, biography, autobiography, science, philosophy, lifestyle and what not. Real love for Science

I came across this book after watching the film "The Challenger". This book depicts what curiosity really means, how RP Feynman was "doing" science instead of just studying it. If you are a person who loves exploring, who is inquisitive and who is not concerned with what will... (View complete review)

Our Favorite Scientist

This is simply a book for people who want to know about the curious man. Richard Fenyman is obviously the greatest mind , but he was a magician too. There are various stories from his life in this book.
Don't buy this if you want to learn Dick's perspective on science or Quantum electrodynamics...
