Book: Surfing The Color Line
Sometimes men find it difficult to talk about depression, particularly African American men. I began to take a more serious look into my mental health in my late forties. Something was happening to me that I could not explain. I had always had the ability to demonstrate resilience when faced with adversity in my life, but this time was different. Very different. Initially, my anxiety increased at the thought of seeing a therapist. I know now that I made the right decision to do so. I proceeded to get help for my condition. Asking for help was the most important first step to treatment and a path to recovery. I am glad that I no longer use the fact that I am a man to excuse myself from the best course of action. I then noticed that something had intrigued me about my own depression because, to an extent, it was intertwined with my personal relationships and my life along the color line.
