"With 750 million people living in villages, India has the largest rural population in the world. Based on his Indian experience, Dr Kalam recommends a sustainable and inclusive development system called PURA—Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas—to uplift the rural masses not by subsidies but through entrepreneurship with community participation. To make his case, Dr Kalam cites the examples of individuals and institutions, in India and from across the world, who, with an entrepreneurial spirit and a burning desire to make a difference, have successfully generated and tapped into the potential of the rural masses. Fabio Luiz de Oliveira Rosa changed the face of the rural district of Palmares, Brazil, by acquiring for the farmers access to electricity and water, which effect combined with better agricultural methods led to an increase in prosperity and stemmed the migration to the cities The 123-strong Magar clan owned Magarpatta, a 430-acre plot on the outskirts of Pune, Maharashtra. In the 1990s, they organized and set up the Magarpatta city which is now home to over 35,000 residents and a working population of 65,000, and boasts of an IT park. "

The authors have presented a very lively and practical view on a long term basis for a sustainable development on a global basis. When the half of the world's population (3 billion) is below poverty line and more than 70 percent of world's poor live in rural areas, Dr.kalam and his co-author srijan pal singh have tried to eradicate poverty by a sustainable and inclusive development called PURA-Providing urban Amenities in Rural areas.
The book has many citations on practical basis which has been implemented on local village basis projects that the author has said can be implemented on large scale basis.
The author have also discussed various methods of how the Government, The private sector and the community can work together towards a socio-economic development.
I have recently ordered this book and have just started reading. I recommend this book for every graduates, especially whoa are more concerned with the development of our country.
Great Book to read..
Indeed this book is the one that each and every social worker should have in his hand . Inspiring , Practicable models are given for emulation to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development. I do also promise to work and emulate the referred models to reach the unreached the targeted 3 billion.
Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam, former president of India is basically a scientist. But, like an other famous scientist Albert Einstein,
Kalam, has also compassion for the under privileged and desires eradication of poverty universally. While Einstein was a committed
Socilist, Kalam is apolitical. Kalam has been advocating his vision 2020 to eradicate poverty in india by adopting the PURA Scheme -Providing urban Amenities to rural Areas. These PURA schemes are varied technological innovations applicable for the sustained development of rural areas meant to improve the economic condition as well as the living standards of the rural masses .
In this book, certain area specific successful achievements are cited. For example,Bihar Paliganj where application of technology brought out high production of Paddyand Wheat: Precision drip irrigation in dharmapuri in Tamilnadu,: A reknowned Nuclear Scientist of Los Alomos giving up his job and return to his native
PEDA AmIram to transform the Village and it's folk; etc. The question that arises in mind whether thy could be made universal and PURA as such does not follow any principles of political economy and appears to be simplistic in it' approach. PURA is said to be New Gandhian experiment.I am not Sure how it will hit the TARGET 3 Billion. No Doubt, Dr Kalam is sincere and he has assembled lot of data to put forth his point of view, His style of writing is also good. As usual Penguin has maintained it' standards of book production/
Dr. Abdul Kalam’s idea about PURA (Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) to eradicate poverty is an innovative and sustainable one. It requires collective response from different stakeholders from village farmer to Corporate. Joined hands spare success. If we all (irrespective of age group and profession) plant this idea into the field definitely poverty will flee from INDIA. Jai Hind. I Love India
Dr APJ Abdul Kalam has really shown the way forward for a true India. The dream of Mahatma Gandhi has found new vision with this remarkable book. Dr Kalam is a fine author and narrated the whole concept of Innovative solutions of growth model for our villages. I would suggest this book truly inspires you to do something big without being jingoistic.
