How I Taught My Grandmother To Read And Other Stories (Paperback) Price: Rs.130

This collection of short stories is an inspiring assortment of life’s wisdom by the fiction writer Sudha Murthy. Though fictional, most of the stories have anecdotes from the author’s personal life, especially her childhood.

Summary Of The Book

A young child receives an unusual request, which is to teach her grandmother how to read. Baffling at first, the experience of living and coming through this strange request changed the child’s mind forever. This and various such profound experiences form the basis of How I Taught My Grandmother To Read And Other Stories.

What would you do if you knew you received more marks on your paper than you deserved? Would you take a strong stand against an even stronger authority if you feel discriminated? The book tackles such issues that mostly go unnoticed in today’s world. It urges the reader to reconnect with his moral fiber through its stories on honesty, friendship, and patriotism. It dispenses valuable advice that can come only through a mother’s fiercely loving heart. Sincerely narrated, these tales enliven an entire life’s defining moments.

One of the simple pleasures of the author’s grandmother was listening to her granddaughter narrate the story of Kashi Yatre, a lady who sacrificed her life’s savings to help out the needy, appearing in the weekly magazine Karmaveera. After the author comes back from a week-long vacation, she finds her grandmother in tears because she couldn’t read her favourite stories and is saddened that she didn’t go to school. She then asks her granddaughter to teach her how to read. Her grandma’s strange request becomes the title of the book and the first short story in this anthology.

Some of the other titles present in this collection include Abdul Kalam, The Red Rice Granary, Heart of Gold, The Rainy Day, Doing What You Like is Freedom, The Secret, and The Story of Two Doctors.

Sudha Murthy’s How I Taught My Grandmother To Read And Other Stories has been translated into 15 languages. The first title in the anthology, How I Taught My Grandmother to Read has been included in the CBSE Class 9 English syllabus.

Suffused with Indianness

One may safely conclude that this rich harvest of stories, How I Taught My Grandmother and Other Stories is marked by fidelity to truth and beauty. Like a proverbial Indian sage, she overpowers the readers with her convincing view of life. All the stories are morally elevating and told with catholicity of stance towards life. The picture of grandmother, the pathetic story her teacher, her husband, Nayana Murthy's initial trials and financial stringency to come up in life, her variegated experiences in her classroom and the rest of her stories - 35 in all - make us wonder at the tender human being amalgamating all the diverse experiences

in all the stories she harks back to past and takes us aloft with her. Each story has a liberal dose of morality about it and she deftly makes it an inalienable part of the story. In fact, they stories are hallowed in reality, is the impression one would get, even if you randomly take up a story. The cover picture is attractive and price is reasonably placed.I recommend this for all for young and old.

A book for all ages

I thought this would be another 'pravachan' kind of book that will just tell what is right anf wrong and the writer would try to enforce hier view on the readers. To my surprise, Sudha Ma'm ' s words are different than any other motivational book. She reminfs me of my Hindi professor Mr Surendra Sharma who also used to tell a lot of stories in his class. We students, the.good ones as well as the bad ones, loved him amd believed him as true guru.
Stories of Sudha Ma'm are also some what similar. She does not try to tell you what.is right or wronh but share some stories from her life and let us decide what is right.
Initially I yhought this book is just for kids but no, there is no age for learning and Sudha Ma'm's stories had something in it for everybody.
Don't miss this book.

My mind was extremely like that of yours..........even from my childhood days....My grandmother was so sweet like that of yours......She is my best friend ...after reading about the lesson regarding how u taught ur grandma to read...I cried a lot that now i miss her too much..............Now am at my husbands home, but that time itself i was at an urge to see her......My thanks too to Penguin group!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
