The Tell-Tale Brain (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs. 419

A fascinating journey into the human brain by a leading neuroscientist

The brain remains a mystery to us. How can a three-pound mass of jelly that can fit in our palm imagine angels, contemplate the meaning of infinity, and even question its own place in the cosmos? Renowned neuroscientist Prof. V.S. Ramachandran takes us on a fascinating journey into the human brain by studying patients who exhibit bizarre symptoms and using them to understand the functions of a normal brain.

Along the way he asks big questions:
How did abstract thinking evolve?
What is art?
Why do we laugh?
How are these hardwired into the neural mechanisms of the human brain, and why did they evolve?

Brilliant, lucid, and utterly compelling, The Tell-Tale Brain is a path- breaking book from one of the leading neuroscientists.

About The Author
V.S. Ramachandran is the Director of the Center for Brain and Cognition, Professor in the Psychology Department and Neurosciences Programme at the University of California, San Diego, and Adjunct Professor of Biology at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. He has also been elected to fellowships at All Souls College, Oxford, and the Royal Institution, London (which also awarded him the Henry Dale Medal), and has received the Padma Bhushan. Newsweek named him a member of ‘The Century Club’, and one of the ‘one hundred most prominent people to watch’ in the twenty-first century.

Story of our Brain

VS Rama Chandran a neuroscientist attempts to unravel the mystery of human mind in this book. His methods of investigation are ‘low-tech’ as he emphasises in the preface. He is enamoured of Sherlock Holmes and follows his mystery solving techniques in his clinical investigations. As a clinician he … (View complete review)

I recommend PitB more.

The sheer brilliance of Dr. Ramachandran left me amazed once again. The book, like his previous works, explains the functioning of the human brain in an extremely comprehensible manner.

However, if asked to choose between 'Phantoms in the Brain' and 'The Tell-Tale Brain', I'd pick the former.

The delivery was a little delayed but the cute Flipkart bookmark made up a little for it. The quality and packaging was great.

The awesomeness of 1.5kgs of Jelly

I have never read a book over 200 pages. This book is about 400 pages and I am enjoying reading it. The book might be about the most complex organ in Human Body, but its written in the most simple manner possible with an engaging conversational style.

Inspite of being a world reputed Neurologist, the experiments Mr. Ramachandran uses is very simple but effective. Just shows how doctors today have become too addicted to technology.

All you need to enjoy the book is the simple curiosity of how the Human Brain is so amazing.

A great journey to the depths of the brain

I was actually surprised after starting to read the book since I had not expected this much information to have been piled up into a single book . The novel ideas and research that he puts down and weaves each theory with the next one to explain the basic essence of the whole chapter.

All in all a must read if you want to know a great deal about the brain! You wont be disappointed the least bit.

Enlightening Dark areas inside our grey matter

This has been a fascinating reading. Sometimes I felt I was reading a detective novel. Dr. VSR's analysis and presentation of the same is very consistent. All the analysis is based in the light of basic tenets of evolution.
The book reveals many dark corners of our own mind which we are unmindful about. One such example is the evolution of language - the way Dr. VSR unwinds the mystery is a testament of clarity and depth of his research. He seemed to have walked down the complete journey of human evolution and picked up those crossroads correctly which led to our present stage.

The Brain sure tells an exciting tale.

I bought the book after reading the reviews and gazing into its 5 Star rating for unreasonably long time. The author treats the brain as a black box and tries to understand its functionality by studying patients with physiological brain abnormality resulting in phantom limbs, synaesthesia, apraxia, autism etc.

Must read :
Chapter 6,the power of babble delves into evolution of language Chapter 7,On what makes us like what we like and what the world likes in general(aesthetics).

The book promised a lot, for Ramachandran is a celebrated neuroscientist and the book (Random House India publications one) had a quote from the one and only Richard Dawkins, which named Ramachandran the "Marco Polo of Neuroscience". The name of Marco Polo carries with it connotations of describing somethign novel! However, I guess the author meant it more to be an inspiring introduction for starry-eyed e
