  • Description
In August 1986, Henry Ashton, a retired Army officer settled in his country home in the Yorkshire dales receives a letter from a Laotian monk entreating him to prevent a hidden treasure which has been stolen from the Monastery from being misused. This hidden treasure is a map, which was sent by the Emperor Kublai Khan to his favourite courtier, Marco Polo. A map, which leads to the fabled city of Shambhala. Ashton sets about putting together a team for his quest, which includes his house-keeper, a retired Gurkha Sergeant, a highly strung lady mathematician from Oxford, and an American mercenary who is on the CIA hit-list. Their expedition leads them into inhospitable Ladakh in Northern India, Peshawar in Pakistan and the rugged mountains of northern Afghanistan. They realize they are up against an unknown adversary with seemingly unlimited resources who will stop at nothing to obtain the prize. The prize being access to a monastery to which Kublai Khan made a secret journey just before his death. They must be stopped by Henry Ashton and his team to safeguard an ancient secret that could threaten the fabric of human civilization itself. Set in the backdrop of the Soviet Afghan war, The Avatari dwells on actual historical accounts of Khanbalik, Kublai Khans capital in 1294 AD. It also draws heavily from the Shamanistic legends of the Bon people and the teachings of the Bardo Thodol, popularly known as The Tibetan Book of the Dead. Chapters move through history and time across four continents as layer after layer of the myth of Shambhala are finally unravelled. It is in this journey that Henry Ashton will learn something about his destiny and something about the nature of destiny itself.

    Impeccably researched!

It has been some time that I have been reading this kind of genre but this book intrigued me, even before I started reading it. The way it was projected on Facebook and that, the images used, that was really good. Now, to the book, yes, its long. Quite long for a first time author.
The best art is that the novel, as it appears, has been researched quite well and the writing style is quite 'pro'. Another thing is the setting, the novel doesn't appear to be by an Indian, it seems by an interna...

Action-packed quest for the secrets of Shambhala - thoroughly entertaining!

This was quite a treat - a very well-written, well researched action-adventure-thriller by an Indian author. In keeping with other bestsellers in this genre, the 'quest' is for the secrets Shambhala is supposed to hold. The book begins with an intriguing murder sequence and the suspense and action build up very well against the backdrop of the history, legends and mystical aura surrounding Shambhala and the Kalachakra. Possibly due to the author's experience as a serving army officer, the war...

    Promising Start

Started off with a lot of promise. One rarely comes across a thriller written by an Indian with such believable foreign characters. The research & the literary references/influences show & they are acknowledged in the narrative itself. Raghu Srinivasan has built a pretty strong pseudo historical/spiritual background for the story. The author's military background is evident when it comes to discussing weapons or war machines. The narrative flows effortlessly between various timelines right fr...

    Three Stars

I read this few years ago. Its a great, fun read but left majorly disappointed towards the end TBH. I have only visited this page back to see if the author plans to release a follow up to the book. I hope there is!

Its a little length one...beautifully explained all the scenarios...does not drift away from the topic while providing information/references.

    Worth a read. :)

    A Great Read!!!

An amazing tale that keeps you flipping pages till you reach the end. References to historic events and interweaving of narrative with current happenings makes it all the more interesting. The story builds up dramatically as one is transported across continents and timelines till it all falls in place towards a grand ending. Is there a sequel round the corner???

    Interesting!

A very well written book, with an international feel to it. It keeps the interest alive, though it's really long for a debutante novelist!
It doesn't cater to only the Indian audience/ readers, but I feel, this book can do well and capture the imagination of a global audience.
    Worth a read.
