The Blue Umbrella (Paperback) Price: Rs.60

The Blue Umbrella is a stirring novel about the simple yet generous minds of children by the author Ruskin Bond.

Summary Of The book

The Blue Umbrella is a novel set in the mountainous Gharwal region. The story is about a little girl called Binya, who on falling upon a group of picnickers, is enchanted by a beautiful blue umbrella belonging to one of them. Incidentally, one of the ladies in the group takes a liking to Binya’s leopard claw necklace and offers to buy it from her. When Binya refuses, she is asked to choose anything that she would like in return for it and she chooses the blue umbrella. After much pleading, the lady consents to her wish and Binya becomes the proud owner of the umbrella.

But, what happens when the village shopkeeper sets his eyes on the very same umbrella and decides to have it for himself? Binya’s precious umbrella becomes the source of envy to him and he tries his utmost to get it from her. What follows is a story of greed, ignominy and kindness.

The book was adapted into a movie called The Blue Umbrella in 2005 and which was later awarded the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film.

Rendezvous with Pure Innocence

Childhood is the most beautiful time period of a person's life. We all want something badly when we are kids. But pure innocence is in the mentality of giving.

Binya is just another child, who, one fine day comes across a beautiful Blue Umbrella. She also possesses a beautiful Locket. She sacrifices one dear possession for acquiring another. The Umbrella becomes her best friend.

Wherever she goes, the umbrella goes with her. Her cattle and her brother accompany the two. The relation between Binya and the umbrella is a sort of ‘Heart to Heart’ relationship. Though the two can’t talk to each other, Binya knows what the umbrella can do for her, and the umbrella seems to know, when Binya will need it and for what.

But it doesn't end here. There is Ram Bharosa, a local shopkeeper, who wants the umbrella. He tries every possible way to gain the umbrella. Victory, or Defeat - it is afterall Binya's innocence that solves the conflict of the two.

Perfect setting, good characterization, great narration - 'The Blue Umbrella' is a book for every child, every adolescent and every elder to read. Though it is a children’s story, it gives a message to every individual. It is a must for every age group and every individual.

Small story collection

It is heart touching story. Simple, short, but really nice.
This book is very good for even kids of age group 8 yrs ahead.

This story is about the village girl who got the blue umbrella from lady from town. Later some old village person become greedy for this umbrella. We all in our life become greedy on some or another moment of life.

The story demonstrate very effectively the meaning of relations, forgiveness and the pleasure that you get out of it.

Author has succeeded to deliver this message with very nice story.

Great kids' book - a very good read

This book is meant for the kids but that does not mean that adults can't enjoy the simple yet fluid flow of the story. The book is set in large type and has superb b/w illustrations to engage the child.
Apart from the excellent story and superb narration this one also has the added advantage of a subtle moral lesson - selflessness over greed.
I finished it off in half an hour and what a splendid half hour it was. Looking forward to reading this with my nieces.
I'd highly recommend it.

the blue umbrella

THE RUSKIN BONDSwith mundane happenings in small towns that take on a curious charm when described in his graceful prose. Usually his books do not shake heaven and earth. Likewise, the events of this books are not of garangutan proportions either. And that is the whole point of it. We are made to pause in our tracks and take time off our reckless lifestyle to think about an alternate world, a place that is so slow paced that you can feel the seasons go by.
