The Caravan (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.230

The caravan is a classic horror /action / adventure in the trend of 'from dusk till dawn' and '30 days of night' copiously coated with spicy Bollywood masala that will make you smack your lips with the taste of bloody curry! written and scripted by Shamik Dasgupta, this OGN is over 80 pages in length. For ages a coven of vampires travel the deserts of Rajasthan under the guise of a caravan of nautanki or a gypsy circus. They lure the unsuspecting villagers to invite them to perform and through the course of the night feed on every living soul. Their heinous deeds go undetected for years, possibly even centuries until a boy named Asif survives their attack. Years later the boy grows up to be a smuggler across the border and on afateful day he gets arrested. Jai, the custodian cop and Asif get stranded in the desert and find shelter in a fort run by border security force and their volatile and violent officer in charge, Daroga Bhairo Singh. As night creeps forth, the caravan of vampires appear once again on the horizon. Asif becomes terrified and tries to warn them but no one believes him. Instead, mesmerized by the glamour of the nautanki, they make the fatal mistake of inviting them to the fort. What follows is a night drenched in blood as the vampires begin their massacre. Asif has escaped the caravan once, but can he pull off that impossible trick again?

About the Author

Shamik Dasgupta is presently the most prolific Indian writer of graphic novels and comic books. His work ranges from science fiction, fantasy, horror and comedy to superheroes. His claim to fame was with Ramayan 3392 AD in collaboration with director Shekhar Kapur and famed author Deepak Chopra. Ramayan 3392 AD is a groundbreaking series retelling the epic Ramayana in a futuristic post apocalyptic earth. This series was both nationally and internationally acclaimed and revolutionised the art and storytelling of Indian graphic novel and comic book medium. Besides Ramayan, Shamik has also collaborated with various other Indian publishers on numerous properties. In 2010 Shamik came up with Daksh the first dark superhero of India aimed at a mature audience. In 2011 Shamik introduced another sci-fi / fantasy series called the legends of Aveon 9 which also found wide spread popularity and hearty praise from the national bestselling author Amish Tripathi (Immortals of Meluha, the Shiva Trilogy). Shamik has presently published a graphic novel yali dream creations called the caravan a horror / action / comedy / Bollywood masala romp, a story about a roving band of Banjara gypsy vampires. The caravan also found a strong place among comic fans in India. Presently Shamik is working on an adaptation of the Bengali classic, Bankim Chandras Devi Chaudhurani . However as we know Shamik, this is not going to be a literal adaptation. Shamik in his exclusive interview with Sholoana Bangaliana says he has got many tricks up his sleeve with this retelling of the classic which will make the content resonate with the present youth and can create a landmark in content based on Indian classics.

Blood, Babes, Guts and Glory

Lurid, loud and lewd, The Caravan is best read with a cutting chai and some hot singaras. The mood is set from the start. You have an ominous dust cloud and the jingle of music, and mysteriously materialising out of the sandstorm a roaming band of garishly dressed banjarans. Cinematically, this is quite exciting, as after the rumble of the sandstorm, you hear soft flute music wafting through it. What follows is pure mayhem.

What you have here is homage to all the years of Ramsay horror movies, the khooni aatmas and the saamris. No corner has been spared - it is choc-a-bloc with beautiful...

Cinematically, this is quite exciting, as after the rumble of the sandstorm, you hear soft flute music wafting through it. What follows is pure mayhem.

What you have here is homage to all the years of Ramsay horror movies, the khooni aatmas and the saamris. No corner has been spared - it is choc-a-bloc with beautiful maidens who transform into vicious creatures of the night. And I could recognise, Koena, Vidya and perhaps a few others. Blood and guts flying everywhere???

The writing is very very contemporary with some very "non-veg" jokes thrown in, but then, this wasn't going to be a walk in the park. The best one is when Asif wonders how anyone can kill the monsters, especially when there is no Christian among them! This was a very interesting twist and leaves you hanging over a ledge.

The setting, as you have it, is India. And within that, a vampiric story of this scale has never really been done. Gypsies, or nomads, are still a mysterious culture with little actual evidence available on their quirky familial ties, culture and belief systems. Thus, as a mystery, it???s a perfect setting.

Bikas Satpathy's art is excellent. The women are very very pretty and well-drawn; especially, Durga. As one would expect in such stories that the woman is a weak and helpless victim - but Durga, is a complete antithesis of that. In fact, she is the strongest of them all with her beauty and rage. The male characters are tough too, but props, except, of course for Asif - who is, without a doubt the wise-cracking hero of the book. Finally, the theme of communal harmony, of two souls brought together through a common purpose and rising above their petty religions is wonderfully wrought as they walk off into the sunset.

OK one...

Heard much about this story and became curious! So bought this and just finished 1/2 hour ago....I should admit the story was okish but could be improved in some places...like the reference of Wikipedia/Twilight movie etc amidst a horrific vampire attack is bit silly..
However, the art was high-standard....women are very very pretty and well-drawn..some distant-shots were bit blurry but the close-ups were just perfect!
In brief : Art will get 7.5/10 story : 5.0/10

Hardcore!

The Caravan is one complete package of hardcore action, adventure, drama, horror and romance.

The artwork is so real and amazing that every character feels like jumping out of the pages... and the action is thus happening right in front of your eyes!!

This is classic blood and gore storytelling for the new generation. Great stuff!

Masala Madness

Enjoyed this unpretentious ode to kitsch from the '70s & 80s. Nice to see standalone stories from the horror/adventure genre aiming to entertain instead of trying hard to be "artsy" & going nowhere. Haven't read 'Devi Chaudhurani' Part-I from the same stable.
