The Descendants (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.460

Published in the year 2007, The Descendants is a novel that revolves around the life of Matthew King, as he struggles to deal with his out-of-control daughters and his wife, who is in a coma.

Summary Of The Book

The Descendants is a book based on the life of a highly successful man from Hawaii, named Matthew King. His forefathers were missionaries and were financially sound. After marrying a Hawaiian princess, Matthew becomes one of the wealthiest men around and one of the state’s largest landowners.

Suddenly, things take a turn for the worse when his daughters get out of control. His ten-year old daughter Scottie is a die-hard attention seeker. His other daughter, Alex, is a seventeen-year old former model and recovering drug addict. Matthew’s wife, Joanie, is in a coma after a boat racing accident and she is now on the verge of being taken off life support.

As they come to terms with Joanie’s impending departure from the world, Matt begins to inform all her friends and family. However, they find out that they have missed out on informing one person, who holds a special place in Joanie’s heart. Matt and his two daughters set out on a journey to find this mystery man, but Joanie might not survive long enough for them to return with him.

The Descendants has been greatly appreciated by its readers and has even landed on the New York Times Bestsellers list. It has been sold in more than 20 countries and has also been adapted into an Oscar-winning movie, directed by Alexander Payne.

Better than the film!

"Never judge a book by its movie", wrote J. W. Eagan.

However, when a good movie hits you strongly enough that you want to read the original book, and the screenplay of the movie, then the movie makers have certainly done something right. Saying that, this review is coloured with the fact that I first saw the movie and then read the book.

Matt as the narrator of the book generates an instant connect with a person in his state. His frustrations, feelings and fears come out with a beauty that is rarely seen in art.

Matt as the narrator of the book generates an instant connect with a person in his state. His frustrations, feelings and fears come out with a beauty that is rarely seen in art.

The book narrates a lot of incidents, and I feel that some of them are disjointed - not really necessary (the movie has smartly done away with them) but good reading nevertheless. Brings out a detail in the characters that is rare in today's reading. Hawaii is not just another place where the protagonist is living - it could have been dealt with as just another seafacing city, New York maybe - which it is not - and comes out as a character in its own right.

Beautiful book.

Beautiful book, a must read

I wish I could have read this book before I watched the movie, beautifully written, good humour, there are few additional elements in the book that are not shown in the movie. This book is as good as the movie. Credit to the author for such heart touching narration.
