The English Patient (Paperback) Price: Rs.350

Set in 1945, The English Patient explores the lives of four very disparate war torn people, a young woman and three men, who take refuge in a damaged villa north of Florence as the war retreats around them. In an upstairs room lies the badly burned English patient, alive but unable to move. His extraordinary adventures and turbulent love affair in the North African desert before the war provide the focus around which the vivid tales of his companions revolve. His very presence will forever change the destiny of those around him.

I love how Ondaatje ends each chapter with an event but with a recollection or a memory. Passionate like the ocean on a particularly stormy night, intricate like an immaculately woven mughal motif, this is one book I couldnt put down. I have read it thrice and I have been held spell bound by Ondaatje’s tale of love and wistful longing, revealed through the memories of a completely burnt, nameless, faceless man who is called the English patient, because he only knows English.

Set in post-war Italy, The English Patient focuses on four survivors coming to terms with the aftermath of war. The Sri Lankan born Canadian novelist Michael Ondaatje writes sparely but beautifully. Fun fact: In 1992, the Booker Prize was divided between two books: Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient and Barry Unsworth's Sacred Hunger. I havent read Scared Hunger but am very interested in checking out the competition.

The one world needs to read

The English patient is a beautiful and classic portrayal of love and war. This is one of those which everyone needs to read.
Ondaatje has written his work very creatively. The most exceptional part about this book is the choice of characters, the best of them no doubtingly is the English patient. Ondaatje seems to have mastered tragedy but in the end you just might not feel sad. That is how magnificently he wrote.
I would rate it 4.5/5 because of its story line, perseverance and popularity. The book seems to waver off its topic a bit, that's where it scores low.

Excellence in narration

The author is quite high on sensitive quotient and it reflects in his empathy to multiple characters. Got hold of this book after seeing the movie and this one doesn't disappoint either. There is a highly poetic quality in ideas and flow of the story, though it is non-linear. Valuable addition to any collection. Really 5 star...

worth a read

You will be spellbound by this book. The English Patient is one of those classic books that deserve to be on book-shelf of all readers. This book has a complex structure however the author holds you through the plot following the successes and the misgivings of his characters.
