The Extras (Hardcover) Price: Rs.329

Ravan and Eddie are back!

And they?re bigger, better and guaranteed to have you laughing out loud.

Having grown up in the city of movie stars who drip glamour, the two mortal enemies, Ravan and Eddie dream of strutting down the road to super-stardom. But can Ravan, a lowly taxi driver, and Eddie, a bouncer-cum-bartender at an illegal bar, rise from their dusty CWD chawl to the glittering heights of international fame?

To complicate matters further, their love lives hang by a thread. Eddie, secure in having got Belle, the Anglo-Indian girl of his dreams, must now figure out how to overcome prejudice from both their families and his own apathy, in order to keep her. And Eddie?s sister Pieta, the object of Ravan?s adoration, is completely oblivious to his existence ? until he saves her life.

Complete with a cast of soul-searching drunks, a nemesis called Three Point One, and nymph-like damsels in distress, The Extras is much more than a book about Bollywood or Bombay. It is the engrossing tale of a near-epic struggle against obscurity and towards self-realization; and is outrageously exuberant in the telling, and touching in its depiction of the large and small tragedies that shape our lives.

A Worthy Sequel

The Extras is a worthy sequel to Ravan and Eddie. The novel starts with a succinct prologue which means reading Ravan and Eddie is not a pre requisite for enjoying "The Extras". However, if you are a fan of Kiran Nagarkar, it is unlikely that you would have missed Ravan and Eddie.

The Extras traces the adult lives of Ravan and Eddie, who initially hate each other, from the CWD chawls in Mazagaon. The story is set in 60's and the 70's. Our heroes nurture great ambitions in spite of their spectacular failure in the SSC exams. Ravan dreams of making it big in bollywood while Eddie...

The Extras traces the adult lives of Ravan and Eddie, who initially hate each other, from the CWD chawls in Mazagaon. The story is set in 60's and the 70's. Our heroes nurture great ambitions in spite of their spectacular failure in the SSC exams. Ravan dreams of making it big in bollywood while Eddie is convinced that he is the reincarnation of Elvis and is destined to take America and the world by storm. Ravan drives a Taxi by the night while scouting for opportunities in bollywood, as an extra, during the day, while Eddie, Much to his mother???s chagrin, works as a bouncer in an illegal bar to fund his musical endeavors.

The story traces the s and Can Ravan and Eddie stand out among the crowd of extras and make it big?

Nagarkar???s brilliantly captures the struggles of the duo in breaking in to the knavish and ruthless film industry set in the Bombay of the 60???s and 70???s with all its class and social divisions. True to his style, all of Nagarkar???s characters have shades of grey and often the line between right and wrong gets blurred.

There are some interesting and not so interesting ???social??? commentaries on brass bands, India???s education system, prohibition and Rajini Kanth resulting in needless digressions from the main plot. The under world and his letters somehow do not assimilate with the story.

The narrative laced with dark humor (with many laugh out aloud moments), sarcasm, profound words of wisdom and irreverent poems make this novel eminently readable and a worthy sequel to Ravan and Eddie.

Kiran Nagarkar is surely amongst the best contemporary indian writer. This book, a sequel to the amazing Ravan and Eddie, is just sheer delight. If you're in the mood for some brilliant Indian writing. Don't think twice.
