Great novel.. Mario Puzo has a superb story telling ability. Quite amazed by the attitude and Cunningness of the Sicilians.. Really a great novel and will be a piece of jwell in your bookshelf. Eager to read the sequels also..

The Godfather novel by Mario Puzo is less famous than the movie of the same name directed by FF Copolla.
Yes I did watch the movie years ago and finished reading the novel quite recently. The novel is more raunchier than the movie though.

The film version follows the novel religiously except certain chapters which do not contribute to the storyline especially those related to Johnny Fontaine and Don's earlier life which eventually get covered in Godfather-II movie. In the novel the killing of Moe Green and opposing Mafia family heads also does not take place during the baptism scene as depicted in the movie.

If you have seen the movie then you can avoid the novel. However if you still insisit on reading it please note that Mario Puzo is no Grisham or Archer. While reading imagine Marlon Brando as the Don, Al Pacino as Micheal and Robert Duvall as Tom Hagen....this will surely facilitate your reading.

I have read the The Godfather about 6 times and it is my all time favourite reading. The Godfather is an extra ordinary novel which gives a phylosophy I half agree with. I believe in "Service to humanity is service to God" The godfather phylosophy is "I sow today so that I can reap in future" In this fear is used as an insurance for compliance. The thoughts of Veto Corleone give insight of human nature, the story provokes an analytical thought process which helps one understand human psychology. One is able to improve one's inter-personal behaviour by analysing the behaviour of the other. One is also able to read the minds of others. Michael's character is also very interesting. The practicle way of his thinking is very educative.

Mario Puzo's break through novel, the winner of loads of OSCARS, rated 9.1 in IMDb. All these to the book on THE GODFATHER Don Corleone! The book is about how a mafia family gets formed, the impediments faced in the way to the gain the Power and once you reach the ultimatum, THEY still wont leave you in peace(They as to the greed, the envy, the lust).
And that is not all. You have half a dozen twists which aids to keep the pages turning. There are few books, when read grabs you, impresses you so much, you want to live like the protagonist. This is one such book. Grab it! Read it! Feel the power of The Godfather!

I'm particularly a big fan of Mario Puzo. When it comes to mafia & organized crime literature, (which is one of the most classic literature) no one can and no one will ever match his level. Coming back to the book, style of narration is quite unique and typical; even if one hasn't seen movie, one can visualize each and every scene & sequence. As the story progress gradually, you will be totally involved in the plot. Other than organized crime & blood shed in war between families, it precisely depicts the picture of real life and human instincts. "Behind every shining fortune, there is CRIME." Read it on the name of don Vito Corleone or he'll make an offer you can't refuse...
