  • Description

The Help, written by Kathryn Stockett, is an intense tale of female love that transcends race and class. The book was commended as a summer sleeper hit by USA Today.

    Summary of the Book

The bestselling novel The Help is a story of African-American maids who worked in white households in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s. The author had taken five years in compiling this heart-breaking novel. The maids, who helped raise white children, weren't trusted with anything else except their work. In this book, a woman called Aibileen is raising the seventeenth white child in her life as a maid. She tends to the toddlers extremely well, because of the hurt caused by the heartrending death of her own son. The second lady, Minny, cooks practically as feisty as her tongue. And there is Miss Skeeter, a white lady who has returned home from College, after completing her degree from the University of Mississippi. She aspires to be a writer. And she yearns to know why her darling maid Constantine, who brought her up, has disappeared. No one would believe that Skeeter, Aibileen and Minny would be friends. But as each woman becomes brave enough to surpass their own precincts, they strongly depend and rely upon one another. Each is in their own quest for truth. And collected, they have an astonishing story to tell, as Skeeter embarks upon a journey to bring out the harsh realities of African-American maids in the South to light, with the help of Aibileen and Minny. The Help has been translated into 42 languages.

    A Compulsive Page-Turner

It is an amazing novel, a modern classic which can in all aspects be compared to writings of HarperLee"To Kill a MockingBird".

This wonderfully written book, which dates back to 1962,is about a white woman,Miss Skeeter, home from college who is curious and anxious about her own maid-cum-nanny, Constantine who has simply vanished from her life. But, gradually she gets interested in the lives of the black maids in working in the neighbouring white families and decides to write a book depic...

    Very Good

    Touchingly marvellous
The help is a story of three brave women who dare to defy conventions in order to achieve their vision of freeing the world from prejudices. It's a very moving story and it's possible to relate with all the characters, especially if you're a woman. I didn't buy this book from flipkart but I encourage you to give it a try. Trust me you won't be disappointed. The only issue I had with this book was its length for the story dragged a bit in a few places. But that's a minor ...

something to laugh , enjoy but also to look into

from the very first pages, you will rejoice this book, laughing into the accent, with the simplicity the thoughts of the 'helps' have been reflected like how celia foote is a less hot n more make-up version of Marilyn Monroe....but within all this commotion, something serious, highly sentimental goes on n you never lose a connection to any of the principal characters.A MUST READ for this generation and if you enjoy this, another recommendation-To Kill a Mocking Bird-Harper Lee a beautiful cla...

    brilliant

an absolutely brilliant book by a new writer . Kathryn stockett transports her readers to the deep south in the 1960's.What with separate schools and churches for the black and white communities, there seem to be a lot of lines which are never to be crossed. America seems to have come a long way since that time .It's angry ,passionate and humorous at the same time with characters like hilly holbrook and minny. Comes in the category of "must reads".

defn read!! Aibleen, Minny and Skeeter just become a part of your life!

lovely book....Gripping and beautifully depicted scenes and charecters!
You actually start living in Jackson, with the author's description of the place. A lot of discussion points , regarding how relevant this book is, so many decades later, and how we respect our own house help.

why I chose to read this book

So I had ordered my copy of the book on Saturday and I received on Sunday before 7pm,which was awesome. Now to talk about the book, the point till which I have read,The Help is quite the eye opener on how the African-American citizens were oppressed and how one single person could actually document everything and even though the language at first was a little hard to follow,I could actually empathise with the pain and suffering the main character went through. Even though I had seen a few part...
