The Help (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.675

The Help" is the phenomenal international bestseller (that inspired the Oscar nominated film) by Kathryn Stockett. Enter a vanished and unjust world: Jackson, Mississippi, 1962. Where black maids raise white children, but aren't trusted not to steal the silver...There's Aibileen, raising her seventeenth white child and nursing the hurt caused by her own son's tragic death; Minny, whose cooking is nearly as sassy as her tongue; and white Miss Skeeter, home from College, who wants to know why her beloved maid has disappeared. Skeeter, Aibileen and Minny. No one would believe they'd be friends; fewer still would tolerate it. But as each woman finds the courage to cross boundaries, they come to depend and rely upon one another. Each is in a search of a truth. And together they have an extraordinary story to tell...

The Help reached me within days of ordering. In perfect condition and good print. And also, a bookmark! Thanks Flipkart.. I enjoy all your bookmarks.. Collecting them has turned into a hobby!
It was the half seen movie that prompted me to look for this book. This is the story of 3 women. Two Black and One White. This is a story of rebellion, a silent rebellion, in face of hypocrisies of the world. The book revolves around the life of the white lady Skeeter who is untouched by the double standards of the society she lives in. A society where white women have no qualms about having black wom...

This is a story of rebellion, a silent rebellion, in face of hypocrisies of the world. The book revolves around the life of the white lady Skeeter who is untouched by the double standards of the society she lives in. A society where white women have no qualms about having black women take care of their children but look down at them in suspicion over silver plates and spoons. Skeeter is left in suspicion over the sudden absence of Constantine, the black lady who raised her. Her quest for answers takes her to Aibileen and Minny. It is through their lives, she sees the other side. The Black side.
Skeeter coaxes Aibileen to write a book about her experiences working for a white household. To add stories of her friends.. In times where Blacks were only perceived as ???workers???, this would be a huge leap. It is story of trust and friendship.. Of wanting to do something..
It is beautiful.. Read it..

A Compulsive Page-Turner

It is an amazing novel, a modern classic which can in all aspects be compared to writings of HarperLee"To Kill a MockingBird".

This wonderfully written book, which dates back to 1962,is about a white woman,Miss Skeeter, home from college who is curious and anxious about her own maid-cum-nanny, Constantine who has simply vanished from her life. But, gradually she gets interested in the lives of the black maids in working in the neighbouring white families and decides to write a book depicting their lives, their plight, their emotions, their hopes and aspirations.

She convinces these maids to share their stories of distrust, humiliation, hardwork as well as the bondings they share with the kids they have brought up over the years. These stories would showcase the real ugly face of the well cultured and refined society in those times, the times when the black maids were fully entrusted to take care of the children, to clean every corner of the house, to cook food but were still considered as belonging to an inferior race.
The love and affection with which Aibeleen raises her seventeenth white child,Mae Mobley(all the time hollering colic baby), admidst the hurt of her own lost son and the love bestowed upon Miss Sketeer by her own maid,Constantine trully reflect the selfless love and emotions of these maids.
The lives of three main characters of the book: Miss Sketeer, Aibeleen and Minny, a terrific cook, whose sassy tongue and strong personality compensates or rather negates her excellent cooking abilities; are wonderfully interwoven among themselves, to give it a shape of a masterfully plotted novel, thus illminating the real and strange history of South America.
It brings forth the real essence of earlier United States and the racist platform from which it has evolved and uplifted itself to build its present day image as a "land of hopes and dreams".
I recommend this book as a must read book of the year.It is almost unbelievable that this is Kathryn Stockett's debut novel and I will most certainly look forward to her next work.

A Piece of Stockett's Heart!

What makes 'The Help' an amazing read is that it's what Kathryn Stockett thought HER maid, Demetri, would answer when asked about her life as a black maid in Jackson, Mississipi. It is amazing how Stockett has captured the escence of blacks and whites. The dialect in which Aibileen and Minny speak is completely 'Country-like and Blackish'("I ain't going nowhere!").

It is quite amazing to see how Aibileen and Minny have different degrees of speaking English. Minny has a more refined form of the two which suggests that she has had more education than Aibileen(which is true). My fa...

It is quite amazing to see how Aibileen and Minny have different degrees of speaking English. Minny has a more refined form of the two which suggests that she has had more education than Aibileen(which is true). My favourite character of the three is Aibileen because though she had been deprived of education for working from a very young age, she has a keen eye for observation and that makes her a most exciting read.

The funniest scene is when Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan writes in her newsletter to drop "commodes" and not "coats" in Miss Hilly's front yard. And sides couldn;t ache more when one reads about "Minny's Pie". Readers will know what I am talking about!

It is an amazing read and those who haven't must, because besides the scenes that will make you shed tears, you are going to laugh along(mostly with Minny) and feel what a powerful and scholastic write Kahryn Stockett is.

A must read

I watched the movie before reading the Book. Movie was so good that I went searching for the book and it was completely worth the time and money. Beautiful read which gives poignant insight into the life of African Americans in the Southern states before the Civil Rights Movement. But more than that it sheds light into how human beings can be so kind and so cruel at the same time. The carelessness and casual disregard for others who are different, how sometimes, people do not even register in our mind as living breathing individuals with hopes and dreams, joys and sadness. This is a book everyone should read and reflect on: Have we not, many times in many ways, turned a blind eye to the plight of others? The Book makes you think.

Not yet Gone With The Wind...

An utterly engrossing book - I could'nt put it down! The story is narrated through the viewpoints of three women ( Two of them are "Help" and the other is a White lady employer).Through their voices, the author has done an excellent job of taking the narrative forward and drawing a picture of the times ( 1960's in Mississippi with the civil rights movement yet to gather full power). The book is specially poignant for Indian readers as we still employ "Household Help" and our attitudes to them may not be different from the White Southern Ladies!

Unputdownable!!

I just finished reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett.
The book draws you completely into the life of three women, two of whom are the helps themselves and the other who wanted to help them in her own way. The observatory skills of the author are definitely praise worthy. Excellent capturing of Mi...

On Flipkart's end. the book was packed and delivered excellently. Unfortunately, it is a very poor read indeed. Rather watch the movie, or borrow from a friend or a library - not worth purchasing. (View complete review)
