The Kite Runner (Paperback) Price: Rs.282

The Kite Runner is an intriguing and powerful tale of the life of a young and innocent boy named Amir.

Summary Of The Book

The Kite Runner is the debut novel of Khaled Hosseini. It narrates the story of Amir, a young boy who hails from the Wazir Akbar Khan district situated in Kabul and aspires to become a writer. The novel is set amidst some chaotic situations including the Afghan monarchy’s fall after the Soviet Military intrusion, the exodus of its natives to the United States and Pakistan, and the growing tyranny of the Taliban regime.

Amir is the son of a wealthy merchandiser. He befriends Hassan, the son of his father’s servant. There is a secret about Hassan that Amir needs to know, but doesn’t. One day, Amir seeks Hassan’s help to win a kite-flying competition. But that afternoon, a calamity befalls Hassan and their lives are shattered for ever.

The Kite Runner also narrates the story of Amir’s father’s emotional journey to rediscover his son, his son’s love life, the sacrifices that they make to become closer to each other, and the revelation of some unknown truths.

This book has won the South African Boeke Prize in the year 2004. It has also been adapted for the big screen as a motion picture. The movie was nominated for the Oscars and it successfully grabbed various awards like the BAFTA Film Award and the Critics Choice Award in the year 2008.

Lump in the throat

This is a well written amazing tale which includes deep emotions. The story starts from the protagonist's childhood and traces all the years until he becomes a man brave enough to execute his remorse.Moments in the story are touchy enough to feel the lump in the throat.

Also, you can feel the essence of Afghanistan' culture before the wars..

Life's truth!

With a backdrop of Taliban ruled Afganistan, the story is set up in Kabul and partly in America, of two little boys-one a royal Pashtun blood-Amir and the other a mere Hazara- Hassan. The story is of their lives, their friendship, separation, guilt, truths and secrets. The story goes to tell you how one coward decision darkens the future, how one lie erects boundaries, how distances crush relationships, how love never loses faith, how life becomes cheap, how killing a human being under the name of religion and God’s wish becomes passion, how one’s caste becomes one’s reason of death…how just one step towards the truth brings in courage and makes one a guilt free human being!
>It has honest expressions, simplicity and the words carry the fearless truth.
>The story reaches you; you can feel it pumping in your heart all the while.

>It is that kind of a book which will remain with you forever; no matter how heart-breaking it is, it will always be close to your heart.

>Every time you will keep down the book, for a break, you will feel the urge to pick it up again and reach the end; however, honestly at some places I felt the story should not unfold, felt that I don’t want to know what happens next, I don’t want to miss a beat again-all this because you become the part of the story. You feel the pain, the pinch and at the end, the hope too!

Beautiful.

Plot:The story revolves around two children in afghanistan, who are half brothers and are unaware of that fact.Their father is a rich man in afghanistan but post soviet invasion moves out to USA.Here the story continues ,however one of the child is left behind by his father to take care of house with the help of a servant. However things turn tragic and an incident in childhood haunts the main lead throughout his life.He tries to redeem himself by doing something unselfish for his half-brother.But things are more complicated than it may seem from far away in USA.Will he be able to redeem himself?

Comment:The author needs to be commended for the way he potrays characters according to their basic nature. The story is woven very elegantly and you can identify with characters.I will definitely vouch for this book.

"Redemption" it is!

Set in the Background of Afghanistan which now people recognize by only one word "Taliban " the word now used as a synonym for "Terror" ... But earlier there was a anti taliban life there .. there where a strange Bonding developed between Amir and Hassan, two boys who have been bred together and later , one ruins others life... yet he always remains loyal to him and considers him what the other did'nt "Friend"
This is a journey from Afghan to Pakistan to the "uncertain land" of U.S.A and a detour back.. tracing your steps back to Afghan, a changed Afghainstan,a miserable one, ruled by mercilles people who call themselves "Taliban" and kill in the name of God.
A gripping story, a true page turner, a story that guarantes to put a smile to your face. Dont hesitate.. Grab your copy as soon as you can.
