    Flipkart Official Review

To set a book in 1866 and then to carry it on, is not an easy feat. However, Eleanor Catton does it to the hilt in her latest book, “The Luminaries”. It has all elements to it – literary fiction, a murder, historical and psychological as well.

Walter Moody is at the centre of this magnificent book. He has come to New Zealand to make a fortune, as he stumbles upon twelve men, a mystery and life is not what it seems like anymore.

The writing is terse and could get a little boring, given the length of the novel. At the same time, once you are into the book, there is no stopping till you have finished it. A book that will take all your time and attention, only to reward you throughout

The 2013 Man Booker Prize winner, The Luminaries, revolves around Walter Moody, a man who finds himself in the middle of multiple unsolved mysteries in New Zealand. This novel is gripping, brilliantly constructed, and a beautiful work of fiction.

    Summary Of The Book

The Luminaries is set in 1866, and has astrology running through the entire storyline.

In The Luminaries, young Walter Moody arrives in Hokitika, New Zealand from England. Goldfields are located in this region, and the protagonist hopes to make his fortune in the gold rush. Moody reaches the township on a stormy night, and finds himself amongst a dozen local men who have secretly gathered at an innkeeper's table. These men are here to discuss some unexplainable events that have taken place in Hokitika. The Englishman learns about Anna Wetherell, an opium addicted sex worker, who has had an affair with Crosbie Wells. Wells is married to Lydia, and is said to actually be Francis Carver. Ah Sook, a Chinese who is a member of the Boxer Rebellion, has come to seek revenge on Carver.

The protagonists of The Luminaries soon figures out that the twelve men are trying to find out how a rich man has suddenly disappeared, why Anna Wetherell may have committed suicide, and what is to be done with the huge amount of fortune that has been unearthed after the death of a poor hermit. Moody finds himself right in the centre of these complex mysteries, which need to be solved as all twelve men have a desperate stake in them. The author reveals that Moody himself may have some critical information that may complete the incomplete puzzle. Readers will come across runic charts with astrological signs throughout The Luminaries.

This novel is beautifully written, and has elements of astrology, mystery, history, and even murder. The Luminaries is the author’s second book, and it is longest book ever to win the Man Booker Prize.

    How did she do it?!

Phew.. I just finished this 800 odd paged book..and what a book! It is beautifully written..plots within plots...stories within stories.. Narration within a narration..

I read a review that said the ending is a let down.. This book is not a mystery where a big secret will be revealed in the end. It's a book about an incident of one day..and how so many incidents and stories from the past come together to make that 'one day' happen.

Plus it uses old Victorian-era writing..such as Oh Tosh!, ...

    The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton

Twelve men in a room unknowingly yet serendipitously interrupted by a thirteenth; was this meeting written in the stars?

Though long at over 800 pages, the story and the pace of the writing never slows down. The characters are well fleshed out and the prose is brilliant.

Though I enjoyed the book, I bought it as a combo offer on all the Booker Prize Nominees Flipkart had. I was more moved by We Need New Names by Noviolet Bulawayo and A Tale for the Time Being by Rugh Ozeki. Had I read thi...

It is a great book that I've read so far. It is the first book that is about the Gods without the so-called myths. It has been proclaimed as a great book and I must recommend you to have a go at it.

    Brilliant writing, great plot.

    Brilliant writing, great plot.

Plot had great potential to be a thrilling masterpiece. But the ending, sort of doesn't live up to the hype created initially. A few plot holes have been left unattended too.

Its a loooong book with plenty of detailed and interesting characters. Go for it only for the love of reading a good one.

Those looking for twists and mysteries that would sweep you off your feet -- pls keep off

As usual Flipkart was very quick

Something different!! something exquisite!!! A heavy and must read!!!!!

One of the finest books I have ever read this year!!! The book is unusually organized and spans over 800 pages. It’s a bit heavy read. It simply means that we can enjoy reading it for a longer period of time. Each character in the book is associated with signs of zodiac and they interact with each other according to their pre-determined movements. Even the entire novel is divided into 12 parts, with each part decreasing in length over the course of the book to mimic the waning of the moon!!

    A big disappointment

The Luminaries, by Eleanor Catton found its way into my reading list after I learned that it was the winner of the Booker Prize of the year 2013. Little had I known about its vocabulary, until I confronted it while reading the book. It took quite sometime to finish this 827 pages book and in the end it turned out to be quite a disappointing one, despite the gripping story and narration. After reading a few chapters of the book, ones expectations about its end definitely reaches its summit, bu...

    stupendity collated into stupidity

Luminaries is a stupendous book. It is a stupendous effort to have written this long book. It is stupendous that readers like the present one did plod through it. I believe that the only people who have read it through must be the judges who rewarded the stupendous effort of the author writing it. That deserves praise. Really, how could she have written it? The central plot plot is as cohesive as the mud around the gold flakes on the Hokitaka fields - it is there all around the gold flakes, b...
