  • Description

The Mountain of Light is the tale of how the Kohinoor diamond reached Queen Victoria after travelling over several countries and hands.

    Summary of the book

The Kohinoor diamond was the pride of India and in the year 1830 it fell in the hands of the Indian Maharaja and founder of the Sikh empire Ranjit Singh. This 105 carat diamond has been fought for and had survived in the hands of multiple people through wars since the early 1200s. Ranjit Singh dies and is survived by four sons who are also killed in the wars with the British. The diamond is now in possession of Prince Dalip Singh, who is just six years old.

In the year 1850 Dalip Singh goes to London to present it to the Queen on the British Governor General’s orders. Singh is treated with much respect and kept in luxury by the British monarchy, but soon he realises that the Kohinoor is much more than a mere jewel to his country. The Mountain of Light is about a young teenage boy's feelings for his country and it's tresaure.

    Lack Luster

The mountain of Light by Indu Sunderesan published Harper collins, is bit of a damp squid. Indu as usual has done meticulous research her background story and stuff is great, but the vibrant live imagery of Taj Trilogy and splendor of silence is sadly missing. It is a good read, if you read it by itself. But if you are looking for an Indu experience. Then it is a bit of a let down.
Of course, she does not glorify either the Prince of Punjab or the Queen of England.
