Description

'Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know'

Meursault will not lie. Unmoved by his mother's death, he refuses to satisfy the feelings of others by pretending grief. At the end of the funeral, he returns to his simple, batchelor existence in sun-bleached Algiers.

Until he is involved in a violent murder and placed on trial. Will he now, with his life in danger, give in to society's demands and 'play the game'?

Albert Camus's first novel, The Outsider received instant acclaim when it was published in 1942, by Gallimard in Paris, and has been translated into forty-five languages. In 1957 Camus became the youngest writer ever to be awarded the Nobel Prize.

Le Monde's Best Book of the 20th Century

This book was selected as the best book of the 20th Century in a poll by Le Monde, a French newspaper. See wikipedia for details.

It is a very simple, small story which can be read at one go. Though it is considered to be a highly philosophical work, the story is very straight-forward and simple, without a single complication.

Once you read the story, you will be shaken. It is about the absurdity and futility of human life. It questions your convictions. An average religious Indian may not ...

Does life has any meaning ?

This book is a very short read(around 100 pages), but it raises some profound questions. It introduces to you a philosophy called "Existentialism". Though Existentialism is much more than what the novel introduces, it's nevertheless a good starting point.

There are two parts in this novella;the protagonist lives his life without giving it much of a thought in the first part, but immerses himself into deep contemplation in the second part(after he is arrested).

This quote in the opening lin...

Excellent

Simple yet with an immense depth.

"I didn't understand how the natural qualities of a man could be turned into overwhelming proof of his guilt."

Thought provoking..

I've just finished reading this book. Its one of my personal favorite now..
It changed the way i though.. about the philosophy of life. The Protagonist of the story doesn't seems like an outsider to me.
As Camus said 'he is not a reject, but a poor and naked man,in love with a sun which leaves no shadow '.
He lives neither in his past nor in his future but he lives in the present and that's the philosophy.

A book that will leave you thinking hard

"My mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know". There hasn't been a shorter and simpler statement that has better described the protagonist of any book that I have read. A dislocation from shock to indifference is gradual yet perceivable. Mersault is the real-life simplistic idealism with a hint of reality; a man who abides to die for the truth, the only God we deserve. This book exposes the farce of extreme philosophy that visits us during melancholy, often obscuring our perception...

An eccentric work

The protagonist of the book, Merausult (i hope that the spelling is right) is a person who shows little emotions and is a man of less words.
This book portrays the absurdity of life. It belongs to the class of philosophy called "Existentialism". If you are not familiar with the philosophy, do read about it in brief before reading the book. Wikipedia is a great source.
Now to the story, everything was going on regularly in merausult life until he murdered some Arab guy. Out of nowhere this c...

A philosophical read on absurdism and determinism.

This is one of the best book i have ever read.During initial reading the reader may feel what a drama is going on but later onwards curiosity arises and ultimately when the reading completed, the reader stood shaken. Mind blowing novel which compels the readers thinking upon absurdism. You will stop for a moments on punchlines like-"Anyway it was an idea of mother's and she often used to repeat it ,that you ended up getting used to everything". A must read novel, once you read this one you will...

Does the job

'The Outsider' is one of the best books by Albert Camus which narrates the life of a detached and an emotionless person- Meursault.
A worth to read book and I was able to read the book completely in a single stretch.
