A group of people are invited to stay on an island by a rich host, U.N.Owen, and his wife. They arrive, only to realize that their hosts are not there but have left an old couple, Ethel and Thomas Rogers, to look after their guests.
The eight guests are strangers to each other, and they have never met before. All the guests find in their rooms a framed copy of the nursery rhyme, Ten Little Soldiers. The theme of the poem is how each of the ten soldiers are eliminated one by one.
The eight guests who stay in the island are Philip Lombard, Vera Claythorne, Lawrence Wargrave, Emily Brent, General MacArthur, Doctor Armstrong, Anthony Marston, and William Blore.
When they get together for their first meal in the strange house, they see a set of ten soldier toys on the table. As they are drinking coffee, a gramophone record starts playing. It is played by Thomas Rogers, according to his employer’s instructions.
The record accuses each of the guests and the Rogers of a crime. The ten people generally acknowledge awareness about the incidents mentioned, but deny their involvement in them. Following these mysterious incidents, their worst fears come true when Anthony Marston chokes to death, just like the first little soldier in the nursery rhyme.
The guests realize that they have all been enticed to walk into a trap. They also realize that they have been marked, and one by one they are taken down, in a manner eerily similar to the fate of the soldiers in the rhyme.
As their numbers are being reduced, the survivors try to find a way out, and find out who the killer is amongst them. Every one of them is a suspect, and only the dead are innocent.
This is a chilling masterpiece from one of the best mystery writers, Agatha Christie. The book was originally called Ten Little Niggers, but was renamed taking into consideration the offensive nature of the former title.

This is the best mystery book I've ever read. THE WORLD'S BEST-SELLING MYSTERY: OVER 100 MILLION COPIES SOLD acutely enhanced my urge to read the book. Though I'm not into reading mystery, crime books but after reading this wonderful book my senses insists me to pick up another book of same genre. It keeps one on tenterhooks until the last page of the novel. One really cannot anticipate 'who killed them?' Dare you can? Go read it now...
this book is a personal favourite of mine.A very intelligent thriller- i have enjoyed from the first page to the last page. this is a very rare treasure in the literary world.
ten people dying one by one may not be something great. but the circumstances which bring strangers together to one stranded island and their deaths in relation to the vanishing of clay models make for a gripping read. even the revealing of a absolutely clueless case is something to praise for. Christie, also known as the "queen of crime" is definitely at her best. i do not know whether she enjoyed writing this, but surely the reader enjoys reading it.
Christie has created the suspense in a very unique and tensed manner. a frighteningly thrilling storyline gets the benefit of a master crime writer's touch. add all of this up and you get a gem called "and then there were none" .
I will go on record in saying that it there is a murder mystery which can be called as "Unputdownable" then Agatha Christie's "And then there were none" is the one which aptly holds this coveted title.
A real page turner...I started reading this book at 11 PM in the night and finished at 2 AM early morning without a break...this is such an engrossing story that you would be slowly entangled in the web woven by Agatha Christie and won't be able to escape till you read the last page and the last line.
You will keep on guessing the murderer's name and would guess it wrong each time.
None of the murder mysteries of any other authors hold a candle to "And then there were none".
As a die hard fan of Agatha Christie I hold this book in the highest reverence.
PS - The hindi movie Gumnam starring Manoj Kumar is based on this book.
My first Agatha Christie book and I'm surely gonna buy more.... You just dont feel like putting the book down even for a second. A Great book just dont miss it.........
Agatha Christie, in words less than appreciative of her vast body of work, is the reigning queen of the detective mystery genre, even decades after she last wielded the pen.
Reading 'And There Were None' cements this claim. Thrilling, entrancing and absolutely unputdownable in equal parts, this is her most successful of all works; if unpredictability is a meter gauge of success, that is. You need not be a detective mystery or Christie fan to appreciate this masterpiece, I recommend this to all literates around the world. Go right ahead, witness ingenious writing at its best and keep making conjectural guesses at the true identity of the killer, I'm sure the end will still be as much a surprise.
