Daniel Kahneman’s Thinking, Fast and Slow deals with the three stages of the author’s career and the subsequent creation of his theories on prospect and happiness.
Summary Of The Book
Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman is a book which deals with two contrasting modes of thinking. The author calls them, System 1 and System 2.
System 1 is an alert, quick and instinctive part of one’s thought process. It also deals with one’s emotions. System 2, on the other hand, is a logical, slow and calculating process. These two strands of thoughts may seem associated with two separate individuals but are part of one.
The author talks about the cognitive biases and loss aversion in this book. His theory is developed through extensive research and experiments. He calls this the prospect theory which he came up with after close inspection of the errors in Bernoulli’s Utility theory.
Kahneman’s theory states that a person’s choice is not based on simple logic but should account for specific behavioral biases. There are mathematical calculations and probability factors stated according to each assumption made.
Thinking, Fast and Slow also underlines the shortcomings of System 1. The author refers to the economics of his theory and discusses problems associated with it.

wonders of human thinking and limits of understanding and
did you notive the spelling mistakes? if you didn't that's your fast thinking part of the brain! coming to the book...
Kahneman and Teversky co-founded behavioural economics in the 60's and 70's. this book is Kahneman's account of how their collaboration started, their key findings about human behaviour and how it gained acceptance -- all written in an accessible manner (btw even their journal publications --key one at the end of the book-- are accessible). reading the book would help one understand human pitfalls and perhaps make one pause before making incorrect inferences.
A good book like this helps revive interest in other books and helps one understand their content with better clarity.
Read this book in conjunction with Thaler & Sunstein's Nudge on how cognitive biases could give handles for policy makers (be it individuals, private and public organisations) to influence people. Check Tim Harford's Undercover Economist for a similar exploration.
If you have already read Gladwell's Blink you'll see that the book basically gives a lot of real world examples of the fast thinker of Kahneman.
Mr.Kahneman may have got noble prize in Economics but his work more pshycological in nature.
This book is a entry door for many of us who were not aware of Kahneman and Tversky's research.
Human Brain is the most complicated system ever known but Kahneman's two characters name System1 & system2 helps us to understand it in a better and easy way.In this book he synthesizes not only his discoveries but those of many others into a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts, illuminating a very wide range of human behavior e.g. The linda problem shows very common flow in human behavior very effectively.
Many other Authors also try to show the complicated Human behavior but the command & expertise shown by Kahneman is admirable.
