To Kill a Mockingbird (Paperback) Price: Rs.203

Celebrating the American classic, this 50th anniversary edition of To Kill a Mockingbird lays down a seminal work centered on themes of racial and class inequalities, bringing to the fore the human spirit cloaked in courage and compassion.

Summary Of The Book

Atticus Finch lives in the fictional town of Maycomb in Alabama and as it is with the Deep South, the southern traditions of relations in race and gender are at the center of this masterpiece. His daughter, Scout is the narrator of the story and she lives with her widowed father and brother. To Kill A Mockingbird first explores the customs of the South, laying down all the quirks and foibles of the neighbors and people that Scout interacts with through her childhood days.

The story of how her brother Jem injured his arm at the elbow is what starts off Scott’s reminiscing journey. This leads them to point out that it was the Ewells who set off the entire string of events that brought about the unsavory incident. And this is what is at the heart of the novel. The narrative that is so delicately handled by Lee is insightful and intuitive.

Atticus is appointed by the court to defend a black man, Tom Robinson who has been accused of raping a white girl, Mayella. However the town doesn’t need a trial since they are steeped in prejudice against the coloured people and to them, Robinson is guilty of the crime.

However, Atticus defends Tom to the best of his ability that turns the residents of this otherwise sleepy town against him and his family members. For the most part, the townspeople engage in hurling insults at the middle-aged man, which is unacceptable to the sprightly Scout. She along with her brother and their friend, Dill manage to disperse the mob of people but the situation grows worse.

Will Tom Robinson serve time for a crime he did not commit and will Scout lose her love for the South as she had before? A poignantly simple tale of losing innocence and more to the law of society, To Kill a Mockingbird does more than just enlighten people.

Published in 1960, it won the Pulitzer Prize and became an indispensable part of American literature. It is the most widely read book dealing with the theme of race relations and has been adjudged as the “Best Novel of the 20th Century” by the Library Journal. The book was adapted into a film which won an Oscar award in 1962.

1. Those Days of innocence...2. Duped by Local Bookstore

I have written two reviews in one.
1. Review - Just completed the book. I had heard a lot about this classic. Wanted to read it, so made a quick purchase (from a local bookshop. more on that later).
It's an absolutely compelling read. The writer does a fantastic job in recreating that magic of childhood which everyone experiences - those days of innocence, of pure, uncontaminated opinions, the ignorance about the ways of the world,...Harper Lee creates magic ! The reader feels like he is living all the events in the book and simply marvels at the fact that he too was once a part of that world called 'childhood'.
About the story- It's about two children Jem and his little sister Scout and the events are described from Scout's point of view. The book spans 3 years of their lives. They are extremely scared of the the Local Boogeyman (everyone is, when we were kids)& have heard a lot of scary things about him. They, together with their friend Dill, who visits them each summer try various ways too make him come out of the house, even though they are scared of him, but fail each time. The book one concentrates on this story. In the second part, a negro is wrongly accused of rape of a white girl & makes us see the events that unfold when their father, Atticus (undoubtedly the hero of this book) takes up the case. The entire town rises against the family because the case involves racial prejudices.
Even though the setting is of Southern part of America in 1930, I had no difficulty to relate with the characters. The atmosphere from that era stood before me when I was reading.
It's definitely a must read.

2. I purchased this book from a Local bookstore where I got it at a 10% discount. I was happy with the deal, but when I opened Flipkart's site I was shocked, for here the same edition (50th was available at a 33.33% discount. Now I will always make a purchase from Flipcart.

Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird

I measure the 'classicness' of a book by the duration for which I remember the characters once I'm done reading the very last page.
It doesn't seem like Scout and Jem Finch will be fading away from memory anytime soon.
You fall in love with the young tom-boyish Scout as soon as you start reading the book.
Her adventures with elder brother Jem will quickly bring back all those nostalgic childhood memories we share with our siblings.
The world, through the eyes of Scout and Jem is an innocent place where, in the words of Atticus Finch, there is only one type of folks..folks...
Set in the background of the 1930's Depression, Harper Lee intricately touches the social issues of racial discrimination and poverty of the American South.
Harper Lee has weaved the lives of the people of Maycomb county in the most believable fashion.
Be it the make believe monster neighbour Boo Radley or the over enthusiastic friend Dill, all the characters seem to have a definite purpose and bring the book alive.
But my favourite character of all is Atticus Finch, the children's father. The daredevil lawyer of Maycomb county comes across as an ideal father who is not afraid to let his children grow up and make their own mistakes.
(In the movie version, Gregory Peck plays Atticus Finch to the hilt.)

I cannot pin-point what made this book so lovable..so real and yet so fantastical..
Is it the portrayal of Jem and Scout ? Is it the backdrop of the rape of a white girl by a black man ?
Still no idea..

If you want to read a heart-felt story this is the book for you...

If only I could give A BILLION STARS to this book

All superlatives seem inadequate to say anything about this book..

It's hard to imagine how a book can be any more perfect than this one. On every basis - plot, setting, characterizations - it is a smashing success. But I suppose if there is one thing that stands out over everything else in the book, it is the wonderful (and not so wonderful) people who populate its pages...

It is inconceivable that a writer who could create so many memorable characters in so few pages would have confined herself to this one novel as her lifetime output. But she did and later on I read about her that she attempted writing 2 more books but eventually gave up because she was not satisfied enough with these books.. I can totally understand, its just impossible to offer something better than TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD...

You do not just read this book and put it away to forget it, you pass the book to your friends/relatives and recommend to everyone. If one had only one book to choose for eternity, To Kill a Mockingbird would be the obvious choice..

A tale of growing up and learning

I just finished reading this book and it has left me thinking on so many aspects. Contrary to what most plot summaries say, To Kill A Mockingbird is not about a lawyer defending a negro. It's much more than that. It is about growing up, having fun, learning and respecting everyone and a lot of introspection. Each chapter in the book has a different story to tell. Each chapter makes you think. And the plot slowly builds up. Each chapter is necessary.

The book is a narration of an 8 year old girl and that fateful period of her life when she grows up along with her brother. They play together, run and chase together, learn from their father, watch him try and save a negro from a crime he has not committed, see their father being spat on and face a murder attempt together. They experience all this and more at a tender age. But each chapter teaches them (and the reader) a lesson.

As she rightly puts it in the end - "There's nothing much to learn now anyways, except probably algebra". Once you are done with the book, you too will feel the same. It's a CLASSIC, don't miss it.

Beautiful..

It's sad that Harper Lee never wrote any other book in her life. She did help her friend in his (Capote), but I wish she'd had written more. She has a gift and it's sad that we will now never be able to read more from her (she has issues, keeps forgetting things, is very sick).

As far as the book is concerned, I have heard of its name in American shows and movies since forever. So I just HAD to read it. Now that I HAVE read it, I won't deny it. It's one of THE best pieces of work ever written.

It'll make you laugh, it'll make you think and it'll make you sad as well. You learn a lot about people through the eyes of a little girl called Scout.

Ignore those who think Gem (her older brother) and Scout are too wise for their age. What these kids learn about people and life is what matters in the end.

I wish books like these were available in our schools in India. But our education system is down the gutter for a reason. No wonder that kids these days get engineering degrees and still 'wrt lke ths' everywhere. Sigh!
