The James family encounters the daily perils of legal and illegal substance abuse. The subtle and profound impact of benign and potentially deadly drugs pervade the life of each individual member, then the collective effects of such abuse wear on the group as a whole. Devastating bouts with alcohol and tobacco take a toll upon the parents. And while their eight offspring are heirs to drinking and smoking, they add to those faults with marijuana and cocaine; some do and some do not. Being a close-knit clan helps in unitybut it hurts by bad example. The entire family is in the throes of MSA (multi-substance abuse). And that condition poses a regular difficulty for them. They also endure the effects of disease, teenage pregnancy, prison and accidental death. But all is not lost for them; a few experience a modicum of success.
