Captain Kohli was leader of the first successful Indian expedition to Everst in 1965 that put a record-breaking nine climbers atop the peak. This spectacular success made India dance. To demonstrate the nation's gratitude and appreciation, the Primi Minsiter Gulzarilal Nanda and several Cabinet Ministers received the returning team at the airport. On 8 Sept. 1965, Captain Kohli received the rare honour, of addressing Members of both the Houses of the Indian Parliament in the Central Hall. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi described the fead as one of the six major achivements of India after independence.
