Good modem cum router

I did lots and lots and lots of research on all the models available in the sub-3K range, and the good ones constantly popping up were the d-link and the tp-link modems.
I decided to go with TP-link W8961- reasons being
1) Dual antenna - these are effective, and I am now getting signal strengths of 4/5 where I used to get 1-2/5 previously. These are through at least 3 walls.
2)No signal drop till now, this little wonder box has managed to hold onto the ADSL signal without problems.
3)Cost effective- does not cost a bomb
4)Easy to install- I was up and running in 15 mins- after a bit of tink...

4)Easy to install- I was up and running in 15 mins- after a bit of tinkering- there is actually no need for the CD software provided.
5)Looks good- actually looks space age- kinda like Darth Vaders(Star Wars) lunch box.
6)No Heat problems- the tiny holes cut into the surface have actually enabed easy heat dissipation.

Cant think of any cons till now- hoping that there won't be any incidents.

All in all- a VFM product, that one can buy without hesitation.
Do remember that if you are to choose 'THE BEST' modem out there- you could think of the Cisco's or Netgears but they cost a lot as well, this was also a criteria for my purchase. In case of damage, would I feel bad about replacing a sub 3k modem?- probably a lot lesser than replacing a 7K one :-)

Best at price point, firmware, features and range

I bought this router as the third replacement after trying the D-link DSL-2750U (See the review there) and a Baton Router + Modem (Which was a total disaster - couldn't even connect to BSNL over ADSL).

This is day three and I can say that in comparison to the other two as well as my old Netgear DGN1000 router, this was a breeze to setup and deploy.

Wi-fi signal strength is above average, beating out the D-link and the Netgear routers by a small margin, so far I have yet to deal with any connection issues for any of my android devices.

Wi-fi signal strength is above average, beating out the D-link and the Netgear routers by a small margin, so far I have yet to deal with any connection issues for any of my android devices.

The onboard firmware is polished and reasonably well laid out, allowing me to set up Virtual servers for each of my Ethernet connected devices for port forwarding over a static IP.

Connection to the internet went without a hitch HOWEVER you will have to muck about with the ADSL settings since they are not supported out of the box - PPPoe and VPI/VPC settings need to be changed for BSNL.

Overall design is surprisingly robust, the router has A LOT of vents above and below and that has made a substantial difference as my old Netgear router would get quite hot by comparison.

For someone setting up a small office or home network that requires a durable and reasonable router at a decent price point this product is recommended.

Worked for 5 months and went kaput!

I had bought this modem in Dec 12. I was extremely happy with the wireless coverage within my house across walls, 50 feet radius. However, after 6 months it started misbehaving and rebooting every minute. I was unsure of the issue and called BSNL multiple times to fix the issue. BSNL techs managed to fix it somehow remotely, but it lasted only for few hours and in the end rebooting behaviour changed to rebooting and getting stuck at just the 'Power LED' turning green. Since I was in need of better bandwidth, I switched over to Airtel cursing BSNL for intermittent outages. Airtel provided a... ()

Airtel provided a Beetel modem free with the connection and everything was back to normal. After few weeks, I wanted to reconfigure the TP-Link Modem on Airtel network as the Beetel modem signal was not that great around 40 feet. I did a factory reset and configured Airtel ADSL. After 5 minutes of uptime, the router started displaying the same behaviour of rebooting. One of my colleague and my Father in Law is also experiencing the same issue. It is quite disappointing to know that multiple users are going through this issue (Google will certify this). There were comments which mentioned that a firmware upgrade too will not help rectify this issue. I have to call TP-Link support now and seek help in getting this sorted out. Since, one of my early experiences with TP Link support was not so friendly in nature, I have no clue how this issue is going to be taken up. Fingers crossed and getting ready to go through the painful process of warranty support and the expected forthcoming's. Thanks to the Beetel router, I am still connected. For now, since there was no acknowledgement/ resolution from TP link on this recurring issue, I would recommend all to stay away from TP Link!

Edit: none of the support numbers published will be answered and you will be running in a circle a lot. Currently, I am supposed to carry the faulty modem to the regional office. I hope I get a replacement. For now, if you value your hard earned money and time, stay away from TP Link.

costly and unreliable chinese product, unreachable support

Last review given below revised after 10 months of use
I can see the price has dropped drastically. In last 10 months I have replaced this device thrice. Believe me this is cheap chinese product which can not withstand simple day to day power cuts. The connection drops frequently (though for a second or so only). This device can not withstand voltage fluctuation due to power cuts and suddenly it stops working. Someone living in some metro city where there is an authorized dealer can expect that the device will be replaced after too much of chasing down the support team and getting the repla...

Someone living in some metro city where there is an authorized dealer can expect that the device will be replaced after too much of chasing down the support team and getting the replacement approved. But if you are living in a city where there is no auth. dealer then it is of no use after the device goes wrong. SO BE CAREFUL. DO NOT GO FOR OVER HYPED FEATURES AND LOW COST.

I was seriously looking to buy a ADSL2+ modem router within range of Rs. 2500/- as my old router went faulty and started behaving nasty. I shortlisted few like linksys, d-link and belkin. I liked d-link 2750u model very much for its price and features but going through detailed reviews on flipkart and other forums made me to rethink and start my search again. Luckily I found reviews about this TP Link model. After thorough check about the model and the company I ordered this. Being based in Bangalore, the product reached me within 15 hrs of order.
The product is amazing. It works very good and its security features are wonderful. wifi range is also awesome. I can connect my laptop/mobile in every corner of my 1750 sqft 3 bhk home. It was working wonderful but...
after less then 3 months I purchased this product, one fine evening I stopped getting internet connectivity. I started looking for corrective measures. Later I found that the device went wrong. The device was getting power, dsl line was also working fine but internet status was null. I checked with spare router and found the internet was all fine.
Here I started searching for TP Link after sales service in Bangalore. But to my amazement, they don't have it here in Bangalore and I guess not even in India. They only offer replacement if under warranty. After chasing down the support team, I got my device replaced from local authorized distributor.
Overall, its a wonderful product within this price range. But there is no after sales service. If one can successfully chase the company support then the faulty device can definitely be replaced.
Another one from TP Link TD-W8968 also looks promising but its not on sale in India till now.

Good Router with decent Wifi coverage

Hi brought this router and thought of sharing some inputs for flipkart buyers.

Setup with Airtel broadband was done manually as it did not work with CD installation.
After this initial hiccup, device is performing well. Start up is quick and connects instantly.

Wifi range is good, with two 3dbi antenna's, could have been better. Both Anteannae's are detachable and can be upgraded to 8dbi which TP-Link sells seperately, but procurment could be a challenge. Also Wifi is backward compatible which can be modified for b/g/n devices. However need to be careful while doing so, to check encryptio...

Also Wifi is backward compatible which can be modified for b/g/n devices. However need to be careful while doing so, to check encryption and wep /wps settings.

Endurance is good for household needs. Have had the device running continously with usage and doesn't heat up so much. well designed vents does help.

Suffcient LAN ports eleminates need for additional router.

Would be really glad if the device comes in black as white might get dusty soon.

Overall, for someone looking at mid segment 300Mbps modem plus router for household / mini enterprise usage, feel this is to be a return on investment.

Great wifi coverage & Easy to configure

I have use Netis DL4322,D-Link DSL-2750U, Bsnl teracom modem and TP-LINK TD-W8961ND. Although all of them are good products what makes "TP-LINK TD-W8961ND" best is it's wifi coverage. If good wifi coverage is important for you buy this :) (View complete review)
