Book: Trades Horses For Wives Charlie McCain, a Wyoming rancher, openly intolerant of Indians, and Magpie Outside, a Crow Indian woman equally intolerant of whites, find themselves in each others presence by happenstance. Attracted to each other, they conquer, or ignore, the barriers of intolerance and marry in a more or less traditional Indian fashion. Bringing up a mixed blood family in a small, closely knit, unabashedly bigoted Wyoming community is fraught with ups and downs, discord and conflict, triumph and tragedy. Through it all, cultural points of view not withstanding, Charlie and Magpie Outside weather what comes their way, each, especially Charlie, having to come to grips with their own prejudices. Through it all is an abiding respect for each other. All does not go as they had dreamed and planned, but in the end they find peace of mind and an affection that has only grown over the years.
