Book: Treasure Island The thrilling adventure story of Treasure Island is one of the best known works of Robert Louis Stevenson. It first appeared in a serialized version in a children's magazine Young Folks in 1881-82, but was later published in book form in 1883. The central character is Jim Hawkins, whose mother runs an inn near the coast in the West Country. Jim meets an old pirate, Billy Bones, who has in his possession a map showing the location of Captain Flint's treasure. When Bones dies at the hand of his enemies, Jim and his mother open his sea chest and find the map in an oilskin packet. Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livesey, Jim, and a small crew with Captain Smollett, set said for Treasure Island in a small ship, the Hispaniola. Jim discovers that the crew of the Hispaniola includes pirates, led by a one-leged man named Long John Silver, the cook of the ship. On a journey to the island, Jim encounters Ben Gunn, former shipmate of the pirates. After several adventures the pirates are defeated, Jim befriends with Long John, and the treasure is found. Jim and his friends sail back to England. Long John Silver manges to escape, taking as much gold as he can carry. Glad to get rid of him the others come back home to lead a comfortable and happy life.

Robert Louis Stevenson was born on 13 November 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Thought he wrote several novels and stories in his short life of 44 years, Treassure Island remains one of his most popular works of fiction.
Stevension got the ideao of Treassure Island when he was on holiday with his family in the Scottish Highlands in the late summer of 1881. One day when his step-son, young Lloyd Osbourne, was painting a tiny map of an island, drawing with interest. Soon he started elaborating on the map and labelled different sites with naems that ultimately found place in his novel. From that day, he started writing the story that was to become one of the best known novels for children.
