Tughlaq, Second Edition (English) 2nd Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.169

Tughlaq is an exploration of the highly paradoxical and myth-driven history of one of the most brilliant rulers India has ever seen, Muhammad Bin Tughlaq.

Summary Of The Book

The fourteenth century ruler of Delhi, Muhammad Bin Tughlaq, was a multi-dimensional scholar. Highly literate in theology, arts, and philosophy, besides being a brilliant calligraphist, poet, and a mystic, Tughlaq was eccentric. It even earned him the title of ‘Mad Muhammad’, a crucial aspect explored in the play by Karnad. In Tughlaq, Karnad tries to delve deep into the character that Muhammad Bin Tughlaq was, and explores the rationale behind his ostensibly capricious nature. The book explores the story through both the historical and mythical dimensions. The action of the play closely resembles the contemporary social and political events.

Tughlaq includes a new Prologue written by Karnad, in which he reflects on the events leading up to the creation of the play as well as its aftermath, such as its general reception and the many other adaptations. The publishing of this new edition of Tughlaq, four decades after its first release is a testimony to the influence of Muhammad Bin Tughlaq through the ages. The introduction to the book is written by U. R. Ananthamurthy, and Aparna Dharwadker has written an essay.
