Book: Two In The Bush Two in the Bush is the true account of a young Indiana couple who in 1946 build and lived in a city house in the Canadian wilderness. John and Ruth Moore were children of businessmen and had always lived in cities. John had help from an architect in designing the house with passive solar and wood heat. John, Ruth and John's father with the occasional help of friends and hired teenagers, moved 40 tons of building materials across the town, into boats, across the lake and onto the site with out wheeled vehicles. The three of them dug the hole, laid the foundation, mad every cut and drove every nail. John did all the wiring and plumbing.
They ended with a house with seven foot, 180 degree bay window, solar and wood heat enoughto be comfortable during Canadian windters and pressurized hot water. All other residents of the area lived in dark cabins with hand pumps, kerosene lanterns and out houses.
They lived in the house for three years and seven summers living on fish from the lake and a large garden. Three children were born and grew stron next to lake and wilderness.
They received mail only when they went to town, about once a week in the summer and far less often in the winter. They had no phone and only commercial radio. The railroad was the transporation and communication line. They were given rides by train crews on freight trains and hand cars. Neighbors were far away and seasonal. Ruth spent six months one winter without seen another human being besides John and their infant.
Forest fires threatened. A thief stole the food that was being saved for a special occasion. A bear claimed the garbage dump. Boy Scouts arrived on the lake after dark with no plannedcamping spot. The weather changed rapidly to threaten boaters who still needed to get home.
