Two Fates: The Story Of My Divorce (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.75

Two Fates: The Story Of My Divorce is the story of a couple, Rishab and Deepika, falling in and out of love, and what happens when their families decide to bring their love story back on track.

Summary Of The Book

Two Fates: The Story Of My Divorce is the author’s debut novel that features a love story gone sour.

The protagonists are Rishab and Deepika. Rishab is a typical IITian with a lucrative career and a dream to become a novelist someday. He is also polite and impulsive. Deepika is his polar opposite in every way. As they say, opposites attract, and the two end up falling in love with each other. They decide to get married and seal their love.

Alas, as with any good love story, there is one major deterrent to their plan. Rishab is a Punjabi and Deepika, a Tamilian. They face opposition from their respective families who strongly disapprove of their cross-community union. But in the end, love conquers all. Rishab and Deepika finally tie the knot.

Now 4 years have passed, and all is not well in their marriage. Rishab and Deepika are no longer in love, and are headed for divorce. But there’s a not-so-tiny glitch in their breakup plan. Their families are now at peace with each other, and willing to do whatever it takes to keep the couple from splitting up.

If getting married was tough, getting divorced is proving twice as hard for the couple. Their families have joined hands to ensure that the couple stays together till death parts them.

Both families even go to the extent of living under the same roof. Rishab and Deepika could either succeed in getting a divorce amidst all the meddling from their families, or on the other hand, they could get stuck with each other for life. Whatever the outcome, the plot and the characters are hilarious and entertaining.

Two Fates: The Story Of My Divorce was published by Westland in 2011. It borrows its background from Chetan Bhagat’s novel, Two States.

Boring and Stereotypical

The author has a rather fancy, ornamental and dramatic style of narrating even the most mundane details but the book failed to capture my imagination. It was a mere aggregation of stereotypes of both the north indian and south indian communities and features quite a filmy bollywoodish ending. The plot seems rather forced and the basis for the story is never strongly established or justified.....its hard to believe a couple is trying so hard to get divorced for some stupid Tom and Jerry type juvenile differences.....the plot seems totally contrived and the author would have done well to just... Instead what you get are some smart alec dialogues and random conversations that only allow you a glimpse of half-baked protagonists and their sickening and pointless obsession with getting divorced for no real reason.....looks like the author totally had a rom-com in mind while penning this one...what with all the lucrative movie deals..a good, breezy sunday afternoon read but not one that will stay with you for long

One for bedtimes or flight reads,

Just over 170 pages long, a cover page with some funny cartoons and an interesting title, which reminds the reader of a recent red coloured cover page book by a notoriously popular writer!!! I picked up Two Fates at the airport yesterday when my flight I was to travel was delayed by two hours.

Judy Balan plots the story of an Indian married couple, a Punjabi boy (an IITian-IIMA aspiring to be a popular best-selling writer) with a Tamilian girl (a student of English turned psychotherapist), how they fell in love, plotted to convince their parents, their wedding, their marriage and their...

Judy Balan plots the story of an Indian married couple, a Punjabi boy (an IITian-IIMA aspiring to be a popular best-selling writer) with a Tamilian girl (a student of English turned psychotherapist), how they fell in love, plotted to convince their parents, their wedding, their marriage and their divorce. In between, how Indian families in general react to such a two state marriage, their insecurities and fears and the like.

This book is what one can call an urban flick full of enjoyable sarcasm and jokes in the background of stereotypical characters of the respective states and a couple who do not so much as fit in to the stereotypes presented. But then what are stereotypes for, as they are the most relatable to an outside audience (not that I favour them all the time). Here they were good.. they added the humour :P

The subtitle gives the story away, but given the funny cartoons it was curiosity of how it is narrated that make a reader like me pick the book and read.

What I loved most about the book - the part where Judy Balan is introduced, some very good humour

I think it is a companion piece or at least an answer to Two States by Chetan Bhagat, but I cannot in my sane mind read a Chetan Bhagat after One Night at A Call Centre... !! Your Five Pointer book was good, you should have stopped writing after that!!!!!!!

Verdict: Mmmmm ok, one time read :) One for bedtimes or flight reads, or when one wants to just read without much thought to it

Disappointing

'Do not judge a book by its cover'. I finally understood the meaning of this saying (literally). After reading the synopsis and reviews that it would be a light-hearted book with lots of humor. I kept waiting for at least a smile on my face but that never happened. The book has no story at all. The characters are so absurd and shallow that they make the characters of our daily soaps look realistic. To sum it up its a waste of time and money. This is one of the worst books I have read.

Rishabh & Deepika seem soooo familiar to me. There's a lil' of 'em & their story, currently brewing inside of me... and as I have indulged & enjoyed each chapter that you have soooo earnestly & beautifully crafted Judy, I believe I have lived a few moments with both of these adorable characters!

Secretly hoping... that as I write n publish the review of your novel on various websites, that you too are busy writing your next novel, God-willing! God bless & Good Luck, Judy! Chakde Phattey!

Oh my....I got the book last evening by Flipkart and I started to read...couldn't believe that the author Judy Balan debut novel is Two fates...Yes, I completed the novel and the fancy was, even if it is kind of similar to Chetan Bagat' Two States, the way in which the story was narrated was really sooo remarkable....Enjoyed every bit....Yes, now I'm waiting for Judy's second one toooo:)
