Unbroken: A World War II Story Of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.1549

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane?s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

The lieutenant?s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he?d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit. Telling an unforgettable story of a man?s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

An epic story of survival

Truly amazing and captivating from beginning to end..

Author "Laura Hillenbrand" has done an incredible job by bringing each character and each incident to life by the way she has narrated the story. The description of POW camp conditions as portrayed in the book is unbelievable. And there are some incidents in the book which are really hard to believe such as 200+ blows to head of an malnourished man (and he survives). And the same man who is malnourished, suffering from serious dysentery problem hold some six foot heavy beam on top of head for 30 mins.

Still an unforgettable e...

The Triumph of Human Spirit

The book traces the journey of Louis Zamperini from childhood pranks to Olympic track champ to Air Force bombardier and finally as a POW in Janapese hands during WW-II.
The story also touches upon the camaraderie which develops withing a close fighting group of the B24 bomber crews, the hearbreak they face when one of them dies knowing very well that they may share the same fate one day.
Louis goes thru hell, first in a dingy for almost 2000 miles in the Pacific ocean when his bomber crashes down and then as a POW subjected to unbelievable tortures and deprivations by the Japanese. Almost...

Louis goes thru hell, first in a dingy for almost 2000 miles in the Pacific ocean when his bomber crashes down and then as a POW subjected to unbelievable tortures and deprivations by the Japanese. Almost 70% of the book covers his POW life. Its a miracle that he made it alive.
What impressed me is the indomitable spirit Louis had which never cracked under severe duress and unrelenting mistreatment under the Japanese. The story then sums up his tumultuous life after the war wherein all returned POWs were emotionally scarred for life.
A Must Read book, thrilling and highly motivating.
