Chataqua helps fight off the Wepeneooc and bests Malapak in a fight using knowledge and guile. Chataqua is in love with Alanoas who will soon become of age. As Chataqua prepares for his journey, Malapok asks for Alanoas... as a Brave he has that right... Chataqua will not be a Brave until he completes his journey. Chataqua sets off on his canoe journey determined to win glory and the hand of Alanoas. He encounters storms and many creatures of the sea. He is beset with kakapa (sharks)... rescued by Calypo-Ma. He prays to his god Okee to give him the strength to go on. He finds that he is being trailed by a gigantic fin... ""gitsche kakapa"" (great shark). He spots a big canoe with billowing ""wings,,"." It is the first of John Smith's ships... the Discovery. The great shark attacks Chataqua's canoe... he is saved by strange men (Ingelesez) in the big canoe. Chataqua returns a hero to the shores of the Chesapeake, leading the strange new people and their riches to his tribe. The relations with the Ingelesez turn sour. Chataqua's further adventures show how the Chesapeake could have vanished (as they did) from the shores of the Chesapeake in a thrilling finale.
