Voices In The Valley (Paperback) Price: Rs.224

The moaning war siren started to blow urgently, silencing the valley, setting hearts aflutter. Soon, chaos broke out, and there was arush of feet in the lane twisted around their house… Little Millie’s skin broke out in goose flesh.

Against the backdrop of a politically turbulent Assam, a young girl named Millie is determined to make her voice heard. She spends her childhood in a rural set-up with seven sisters, three anxious matriarchs and a resigned father—this is what her small world is all about.

Born in a family of priests, she struggles with orthodoxy and convention, and goes on to become a student leader—something which only foreshadows the bigger role she is destined to play. A flawed horoscope delays her marriage, but hastens her emancipation. Her tryst with romance is overwhelming, and sweeps her off feet, but...
Ethnic clashes, militant activities, violent elections seethe the countryside otherwise home to several tribal communities, lush tea gardens, exotic orchids, sundry birds, one-horned rhinos and much more.

Whether Millie’s voice is loud enough to make an impact in the Brahmaputra valley remains to be seen…

About the Author
Suravi Sharma Kumar is a doctor by profession but has always been fascinated by the world of literature. What inspired her to write this book was the fact that most of ‘mainland’ India sis still unfamiliar with the country’s north-east and is unaware of its innate beauty.

This is her first book and is based on her research and experiences in the valley.

I have read the book twice. In my frank opinion, its an excellent work of literature. Use of Grammar is complex and comprehensible. This book will be categorized as a classic and if the academic and literary community can be persuaded, it may well be accepted for an English prose or non-detail text for English educating students.

The content itself has several characters entangling themselves with the main storyline, and it takes humongous effort to focus and concentrate on the main protagonist.

The art, the ease of flow of text and the how you have narrated in miniscule detail giving a vivid picture of the settings is commendable.

I am sure given your skills and background, I wish that authoring a book would give you immense satisfaction and would fall in love with the book like your child. The emotions of delivering a child is euphoric and immensely pleasurable.

I congratulate you on your success.

A must-read

A really awesome piece of work, a result of thorough research and hard work. Apart from entertaining, it also gives the reader a lot of info on the (way of) life of the people there in Assam, and the tragedies faced by them especially in the mid 20th century. It shows the feelings of a girl from a middle class spiritual family and her constant fight to make her voice heard. It is indeed a must-read for any reader. Hearty congrats to Ms Sharma and special thanks to Flipkart for helping me get the book.

A piece of art

A lyrical piece of work with intelligent observations written with detailed research.

The book has several themes to it -story of a young girl, story of a female survivor, beauty of landscape and rural Assam, evolution of terrorism in the state...
Is an epic with poetic quality to it.
An ambitious piece of work and would make its way to some big literary award.
