Voices in the Valley (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.295

Voices in the Valley is the first novel by Suravi Sharma Kumar that fervently addresses how social circumstances shape an individual.

Summary of the Book

Voices in the Valley is a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of politically unstable Assam. The story traces the life of a young girl named Millie who is determined to make a difference in the society and make her voice heard. She spends her childhood in the countryside in a rustic set-up with seven sisters, three matriarchs and a submissive father. Born in a family of priests, she struggles with orthodox and conventional norms. She goes on to become a student leader, which prepares her for the bigger role she is destined to play later in her life. Her faulty horoscope delays her marriage, but hastens her freedom. Political unrest, ethnic clashes and violent elections seethe the villages of Assam, which was otherwise home to several tribal communities and exotic fauna and flora. Will Millie be able to make an impact in the Brahmaputra valley? Voices in the Valley will make for an engaging and riveting read.

About Suravi Sharma Kumar

Suravi Sharma Kumar is a doctor by profession with a deep interest and liking for literature. She was inspired to write this book because most people of mainland India are not familiar with the country’s North-east and unaware of its innate beauty. This is her debut novel and is largely based on her research and experiences in the valley.
