Summary Of The Book
Vyakti Aani Vyalli is a collection of character sketches by Purushottam Laxman Deshpande, the popular Marathi writer. Drawing from real-life characters and incidents, these sketches are as varied as people can be and quite interesting.
The stories in Vyakti Aani Vyalli were written over a period of more than 20 years, from 1944 to 1968. Of the 20 stories in the book, the one about Bhaiyya Nagpurkar was the earliest one written by the author. The lead character is a Brahmin by birth, but he is often mistaken for a Muslim for various reasons. He is wealthy man with a bad reputation, but he admires Gandhiji, the Father of Nation. He even avoids drinking alcohol on the days when Mahatma is fasting.
There are a lot of other varied sketches in this book. Narayan helps in arranging marriages and also ensures that the functions go smoothly. The author reveals an interesting side of Narayan.
There is Parophari Gampu who would go out of the way to help people, and then there is the washer-man Namu Parit. The washer-man breaks buttons and uses his customers clothes on himself, and never delivers on time. He has every other evil habit imaginable but has no idea that the things he do are wrong.
There is also a school boy named Sakharam Gatne, who speaks classical Marathi and is addicted to books. Lakhu Risbud, who is another interesting character, is a disillusioned writer who wanted to change the world with his pen, but ends up working as a sub-editor in some obscure magazine.
The list goes on, with a fine variety of characters reflecting the ironies of life. Vyakti Aani Vyalli earned the writer a Sahitya Akademi Award.

Purushottam Laxman Deshpande, also known as Pu. La., is one of the most popular and widely read of Marathi writers. He was also a playwright, singer and musician.
His other Marathi books include Asa Mi Asami, Tee Phularani, and Aghalpaghal (Marathi).
The author’s books are known for their humor and the way the stories gave a picture of the people and society with all the accompanying contrasts and idiosyncrasies.

Best in Marathi Literature
Vyakti ani valli, i think is the best creation by pu la deshpande and also in the marathi literature..
The last two sentences of each character seems like the turret of all. They silently brings few drops on the edges of eyes.
I specially like characters of nanda pradhan, antu barva, narayan, sakharam gatne, to, hundred percent pestonkaka, babadu, nama parit bhayya nagpurkar etc etc etc. As per the name of this book, pu la especially took the 'vallies' in society to sketch those characters. and we can simply find those characteristic peoples all around us. might not all properties in them but some that make them different from others.

This is my very first purchase from flipkart.
1) About flipkart:
i) I placed an order on 17th October 2012 and got it delivered on 22nd October 2012. So it was delivered on 5th working day. A bit late.
ii) Book was in excellent condition. Nicely laminated in very thin plastic to keep it safe and then wrapped in thick cardboard paper. Also bookmark was given with it for free. So that was nice!
2) About the book:
This is my all time favorite book by P. L. Deshpande. Paper quality was good. Print quality was nice. Loved it.
Verdict: Go for it!

As usual Pu La rocks with his writing... amazing caracters...
Specially i love "Nanda".

A amazing observational skill of Pu.La.Deshpande brings to life these 20 characters. Each one of them unique in their own way and yet so common to be found in our day to day life.
Intelligent humor coupled with simplicity of the characters described brings them very close to you.
A 100% recommended reading for any marathi novel reader inspired by Pu.La.Deshpande's works.

amazing book
its a really amazing read and i really believe that every one should really read this book... it makes u laugh and sometimes cry.. the characters are so alive and anyone can easily relate with them.. my favourite character was narayan and chitale master...
