In the fall of 2004, following an urge she couldn't explain but which had nagged at her persistently for years, Jude Messineo dared. Choosing to trust her intuition over the well-intentioned objections of family and friends, she quit a high-paying management job, sold her house, gave away all of her possessions, and drove away from Chicago, her home for all of her 46 years. Her destination was Gulf Shores, Alabama, for what she thought would be a quiet and introspective three month sabbatical as she decided what to do next with her life.
Scarcely a week into her carefully planned retreat Hurricane Ivan roared into Gulf Shores, leaving her homeless for the next three months and forcing her to "go to Plan B, whatever that might be."
