Summary of the Book

In an alternate world, the existence of American vigilantes who called themselves the Watchmen, changed everything. The US won the Vietnam war, using the power of the superheroes to solve their problems. However, the cold war is still in effect and Nixon is still President. The Watchmen have aged, and they fall apart due to their differences. Someone begins to target them, killing the Comedian, a surly, cigar smoking man who has as few morals as the criminals he hunts. To investigate his murder, the rest of the Watchmen come together once again, but things have changed. The presence of a being such as Dr. Manhattan, an immortal capable of using nuclear forces to devastate his foes, changes the world forever. Now, Rorschach, a paranoid vigilante who trusts no one begins his own investigation as he finds the rest of his old comrades untrustworthy. Soon, others join the investigation, revealing that something worse lurks beneath the semblance of what appeared to be a murder for revenge. However, as the Watchmen claim to protect the United States, who will watch over them?

About the Authors

Alan Moore is a comic book writer, best associated with his work on Watchmen and V for Vendetta. In the DC Comics universe, he has most notably worked on Batman: The Killing Joke.

Dave Gibbons is an American comic book artist and letterer. He has also collaborated with Moore on Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
