WD My Book Essential 3.5 inch 1 TB External Hard Disk

I placed the order on 18th in the night at 3. Next day morning i got a call from the executive to confirm the order. On 20th morning at 10 i got the delivery boy standing out my door. He handed over a box. When i opened it. I saw the hard drive box sealed pack & covered with the protection plastic to prevent the damage. I opened the box & got 1 hard drive, 1 Adapter with one 3pin plug & Two 2 pin plugs as per your socket, The 3.0 USB cable which is compatible with 2.0 & 3.0 automatically & the easiest instruction manual. The hard drive looks great. The only problem is with the adapter's wall socket plug. It is flat not round designed as per the latest wall sockets. So now i will need to call a electrician to get one wall socket changed as per the flat. Thanks Flipkart for this. I will look for other best deals & will buy lots of products from you in future.

First, the packaging. Western Digital (WD) does an impressive job of securely packaging this hard drive with a minimal amount of waste. There's no unnecessary plastic or cardboard.

This 2 TB drive has to be plugged into the wall socket as well as powered with a USB cable. This My Book Essential External Hard Drive has an impressively long power cable. WD figures the customer is smart enough not to accidentally strangle themselves with a long power cord. So many products I buy have a cord that is so short as to make the item almost unusable. 5 stars to WD for trusting the intelligence of the buyers of their products.

It took approximately 140 minutes to copy 70 GB of data from my old external drive to this one. This is impressively fast. The drive is also designed to accommodate USB 3.0.

I didn't check out or try to install the backup software or the other extras that came with the product.

So this drive was easy to install right out of the box and it worked without any difficulties or technical headaches. I would definitely recommend this product.

I have purchased WD My Book Essential 3.5 inch 1 TB External Hard Disk (Black). My AC adapted stopped working within a month so I raised a complain for replacement under warranty.

The Western Digital customer care was always busy and I have to wait on hold for couple of hours which is ridiculous & no Western Digital support agent was providing any confirm information. Each time They are saying me to wait till this week as my adapter is not available. For two months they gave me the same reason. When I tried to launch complaint via email provided on Western Digital web site, I received reply as "Thank you for contacting Western Digital". At the end I purchased a china made adapter and made a promise to myself not to buy any WD product again. They will just sell their product and wash off their hand.

This irresponsible working of Western Digital as well as RT enterprise had caused me intense inconvenience so please don't buy any WD product or else you will be facing the same problem if the device malfunctions. Just google "western digital consumer complaints" and you will know the horrible experience people have faced who bought WD products.

I bought this 1TB disk from Flipkart in May 2012. (I thought of buying a 1TB disk from US but that will not give me warranty)
I am using this as a backup drive since last 6months. Storing my non-active content (like bulk movies, TV shows, video songs, photographs, etc) It does the job very well. Transfer speed is good.
My product doesn't gets heated up, the temp. rise obvious and should not create any fuss. Just keep your disk at a well ventilated place to avoid over heating.

Since nowadays a lot of options are available for this price range, please validate your choice before buying anything.
Cons:
1. This disk requires a external power supply (through AC adapter)
2. It is not portable (can't carry it in jeans pocket with 1 USB cable)
Pros:
1. It get heated (all electronic devices get)
2. It has a LED light representing active transfer operation
3. It is more reliable storage as compared to ones which uses flash memory. Flash memory may cause data loss on power failure and the recovery of data from a flash disk is much difficult as compared to this disk which uses old-school magnetic hard disk internally.

The drive is very silent and looks cool. The adapter supplied with it is now 2 pin type standard type we use.

The My Book Essential’s included software, SmartWare, is also responsible for securing the drive. It provides automatic and continuous protection, backing up your content each time you save changes. To ensure that the drive is performing properly, built-in diagnostics allows the user to conveniently prevent problems before they can cause any damage the top, rear and back ventilation means it won’t overheat if you do so.

Once content has been transferred to the drive, it is protected by hardware encryption, a secure password and a Kensington security slot.

The smartware software registers your drive with wd to provide firmware and software updates. When i registered my drive i got firmware update from wd :)

This drive is designed to save energy by WD green power technology that lowers the drive power consumption by 30% by putting the drive to sleep mode when it is idle for minimum 10 minutes. It turns itself on and off with your computer.

I'm impressed by this drive it attains the copy speed upto 50 mb/s when usb connected on eSATA port. Still yet to test on usb 3.0.
