WD My Book Essential 3.5 inch 2 TB External Hard Disk

I have purchased WD My Book Essential 3.5 inch 1 TB External Hard Disk (Black). My AC adapted stopped working withing a month so I raised a complain for replacement under warranty.

The Western Digital customer care was always busy and I have to wait on hold for couple of hours which is ridiculous & no Western Digital support agent was providing any confirm information. Each time They are saying me to wait till this week as my adapter is not available. For two months they gave me the same reason. When I tried to launch complaint via email provided on Western Digital web site, I received reply as "Thank you for contacting Western Digital". At the end I purchased a china made adapter and made a promise to myself not to buy any WD product again. They will just sell their product and wash off their hand.

This irresponsible working of Western Digital as well as RT enterprise had caused me intense inconvenience so please don't buy any WD product or else you will be facing the problem if the device malfunctions. Just google "western digital consumer complaints" and you will know the horrible experience people have faced who bought WD products.

First up this is my first purchase with flipkart and i gotta admit the delivery system is fantastic

i was supposed to get the drive on 14th but i got it on 9th wen i had ordered it on 5th. I took the COD option and it was good enough. Packaging is excellent and was filled wid bubble wraps :P

Now as for the drive :

Since i needed a 2tb drive i had two choices out of internal vs external.I went with external as it was nearly same as the internal one and i can take the drive to my frnz's home if needed.

Now in external i had 2 choices,

1.Seagate freeagent goflex desk 2tb

2.wd mmy book essential 2tb Which i bought

The main reason i went with WD is that it runs incredibly cool. Before making my purchase i read on various famous tech review sites like CNET or AnandTech that the seagate freeagent runs hot as it has almost ZERO space for air to flow and has nearly no ventilation. So as expected the seagate runs very hot and during heavy use (like the first day when u get an empty hdd and if u want to fill it) the drive becomes corrupt due to heat.and i assume no one buys a 2000gb drive unless one plans to do heavy use

Thats why i love the WD. i have been using the drive and even when moving 200 gb of data at one stretch in 3 hrs it never gets alarmingly hot .. by just keeping the room fan switched on i get a temp of 42-48 'C which is very good for a drive

ADVANTAGES of seagate
The drive had a faster read/write speed as it uses a 7200 rpm drive where as WD uses a ~6000 rpm drive (and thus runs cooler)

But accor to me a slower speed WD is better than havong the risk of precious data being wiped off.

First of all thanks to Flipkart & Kudos to them for their awesome customer service, lightening fast delivery and awesome packaging. I ordered the product on 22nd march 2012 evening 5 pm and got it delivered through Blue Dart on 24th at 02 pm. This is my third ext. Hard disk after seagate go-flex & WD my passport 500 GB's. Since I’m working as a research associate, so loads & loads of data.
On opening the packaging box, HD was in good condition, amazing black glossy finish, lite weight and all accessories intact. Connected the product to my laptop - detected in 05 seconds and is working smoothly without any creaky sound as found in other HD’s. Data transfer speed is lighting fast in USB 3.0 as committed by manufacturer of WDC. Better than other brands in the segment, small in size and light in weight, easy to use.
WD HD comes with WD software which has a backup software ... and if u register your product online they do take the warranty from the date of manufacturing and if u attach the copy of bill of purchase then from that day and the warranty is online warranty so give u relief that you don't have to run to the dealer for the product warranty in case any problems occurs.
I’m a diehard fan of WDC range of products. True value for money spent and Crafted for years to last. Thanks to WDC & Flipkart and other valued flipkart customers for sharing their unbiased opinions .

After 8 months it sucked very badly...
1. After 4 months power adapter was dead and original adapter was not found in market,
and only option to buy the adapter was from WD official website where it is out of stock for more than 2 months than i purchased loal adapter from market in 250 Rs.
2. After 8 months of use suddenly some partitions were corrupted...i used some tools for data recovery...
3. WD customer care said that data will be lost if send it for warranty.
4. Sometimes it doesn't work on USB 3.0 ports (I dont know why)
5. And after 1 year now it always makes a noise "ccrr... " when i use it.
6. And also now copy speed is 10 mbps with vibration.

NOW what should i do... if i send it to warranty, i will have to make backup of my 1.5 Tb data... PLease Dont buy this crap......

O got this because I have a lot to store, and wanted to organize my media on my computer.

Packaging: Good. Shock proof, well protected.

Delivery: As promised on time.

Product: Build looks sturdy and there is sufficient space for cooling air flow. The disk powers up quickly. It comes bundled with useful security and backup software from WD. I have set the disk to power off after 20 minutes of disuse to save power and elongate its life. This I find is a very good feature.

As far as copying data is concerned it is much much faster than your USB2 hdds. For copying large files I got a speeds of 50 to 60 Mbps, which otherwise on an USB2 are 20-27Mbps at max, making it almost as fast as a SATA2 internal disk.

Copying multiple small files in bursts is equally fast, though the seek time is not as fast as an internal disk.

All in all, I am very satisfied with the disk and the service.
